Mountain View Hospital is looking for a Medical Coding Specialist to join our team!

 

JOB SUMMARY:

Accountable for conversion of diagnoses and treatment procedures into codes using an international classification of diseases. The coder assigns ICD-9- and ICD-10 CM and/or HCPCS codes, creating APC or DRG group assignment for reimbursement purposes. Requires skill in the sequencing of diagnoses/ procedures to optimize reimbursement. Must be able to read and interpret operative reports, history and physicals, physician orders, and pathology reports to determine the correct CPT and diagnosis coding. Ensures that records are coded in an accurate and timely manner. Abstracting worksheets to put codes in the computer.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Ensure that records are coded appropriately to coding guidelines.
2. Reviews charts thoroughly to ascertain all diagnoses/procedures.
3. Contacts responsible physician/provider in professional manner if diagnosis is not available on chart.
4. Coder’s diagnoses and procedure on clinical summary agree with physician’s preference.
5. Refers chart to supervisor or manager, if there is a question regarding the diagnosis code.
6. Utilizes computerized coding/abstracting equipment.
7. Codes all diagnoses/procedures in accordance to ICD-10-CM coding principles and the Coding Manual.
8. Logs diagnoses, procedures and other abstracting data on worksheet to input in the computer.
9. Ensures data quality and optimum reimbursement allowable under the federal and state payment system.
10. Review and complete insurance denials/appeals as needed, under direction of supervisor.
11. Acts as a resource person to hospital staff for coding and may provide education regarding coding changes/issues.
12. Must be familiar with all charting and coding requirements.
13. Demonstrates an ability to be flexible, organized and function well in stressful situations.
14. Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity; ensures confidentiality of patient’s records.
15. Maintains a good working relationship both within the department and with other departments.
16. Participates in educational program and in-service meetings.
17. Attends meetings as required.
18. Accepts and completes other duties as assigned or requested.
19. Maintains patient confidentiality at all times.
20. Manages and operates equipment safely and correctly.
21. Maintains 95% rate of information correctly abstracted.
22. Completes annual education requirements
23. Maintains regulatory requirements.
24. Reports to work on time and as scheduled, completes work within designated time.
25. Wears identification while on duty, uses computerized punch time system correctly.
26. Adheres to dress code, appearance is neat and clean.

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily as noted on the attached competency list. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Education/Certification: High School diploma or general education degree (GED). Knowledge of diagnoses/procedures in accordance with ICD-9 and ICD-10 CM coding principles for acute care facilities. Must be CPC certified.

Experience: One year or more related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Equipment/Technology: Ability to use abstracting and coding software, computer, fax machine.
Language/Communication: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance. Instructions and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. The ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

Mathematical Skills: Basic math skills

Mental Capabilities: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Performance: Must maintain positive and professional attitude
