Job Title:Medical Assistant/Front Desk
Job Summary:. Provides care that meets the psychosocial, physical and general aspects of care; meets the communication needs of patient and family; provides care that reflects initiative and responsibility indicative of professional expectations, under the supervision of a Registered Nurse and/or physician. Greets and registers patients. Verifies patient demographic and insurance information. Performs clerical duties as needed.
Duties and Responsibilities:
· Provides direct patient care under the supervision of an RN/LPN/LVN and/or physician, evaluates outcomes, consults with other health team members as required.
· Notifies appropriate licensed staff when patient complains of pain.
· Performs patient care responsibilities considering needs specific to the standard of care for patient's age.
· Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.
· Communicates appropriately and clearly to co-workers, physicians and Office Manager.
· Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity. Identifies and addresses psychosocial, cultural, ethnic and religious/spiritual needs of patients and family.
· Interacts professionally with patient and family and involves patient and family in patient education.
· Maintains infection prevention and control standards for exam/procedure rooms; cleans, disinfects, changes linen, etc.
· Maintains office instruments; knowledgeable of sterilization techniques and biological indicators for sterilization.
· Meets current documentation standards and policies.
· Maintains established office policies and procedures, objectives, performance improvement program, safety, environmental and infection prevention and control standards.
· Maintains a safe, comfortable and therapeutic environment for patients and families in accordance with office standards.
· Answers telephone calls in a professional manner, directs calls appropriately; refers patient problems to office physician; schedules patient appointments.
· Assists in cost containment through appropriate ordering and conserving of supplies and equipment.
· Review physician’s/provider’s schedules from eCW and determine patients that need to be verified. Example: New Patients, established patients that have not been seen within the past month and all exchange patients every time.
· Accurately obtain, confirm and enter patient demographics into eCW (the practice management system.) Example: Insurance cards/ID numbers should be checked to assure that insurance is entered correctly.
· Verification of benefits through designated websites. Examples: Navinet, Availity Cigna, Coventry, NHP, Care Plus etc. Maintains a good working relationship with all staff members of the office.
· Self-monitor areas that “mistakes” have been identified and “coached” for correction to assure ongoing accuracy for all job tasks. Example: Proactively seek additional training or assistance to assure complete understanding of job responsibilities as well as feedback on own performance. Proactively review daily schedules for updates and add on's that need to be verified.
· Communicate with your co-workers when working to cover other team members during their absence or inability to cover all assigned departmental tasks.
· Maintains and operates equipment safely and correctly.
· Performs any and all other duties as assigned.
· Meets dress code standards; appearance in neat and clean.
· Completes annual educational requirement.
· Maintains regulatory requirements.
· Maintains patient confidentiality at all times.
· Reports to work on time and as scheduled; completes work within designated time.
· Wears identification while on duty, uses computerized punch time system correctly.
· Represents the organization in a positive and professional manner in the community.
· Complies with all organizational policies regarding ethical business practices.
· Communicates the mission, ethics and goals of the office.
Required Skills & Abilities:
· Ability to assist nursing and medical staff with routine examinations and patient treatments.
· Knowledge and understanding of HIPPA regulations
· Ability to be flexible, organized and function under stressful situations. Response to the patient is appropriate in emergency or physically distressful situations.
· Demonstrates the ability to assist physicians with procedures and perform services requiring technical and manual skills under the direction of an RN/LPN/LVN and/or physician.
· Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and the Ability to position and prep patients for office procedures.
· Demonstrates skills necessary to provide age appropriate care to the patients served.
Regulatory Requirements:
· Successful completion of a Medical Assistant Program or six (6) month Nurse Aide Program. Certified Medical Assistant through the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) preferred.
· Completion of venipuncture class. Current BCLS certification.
Language Skills:
· Able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
· Additional languages preferred.
· Basic computer knowledge.
