SUMMARY OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Under general supervision of the Bureau Chief, the Mediator exercises independent judgment in determining the proper course of mediation for Health Care complaints. Consistent with office policies, he or she shall formulate and effectuate a plan of action for the course of mediation. The Mediator identifies patterns or practices that are actionable under the Consumer Fraud and Deceptive Business Practices Act and identifies crucial issues regarding Health Care disputes. He or she collects relevant factual information regarding consumer complaints while preserving the confidentiality of consumer health information.
The Mediator acts as a facilitator to resolve the problems through informal mediation. He or she contacts insurers and Health Care providers to clarify the issues and organizes conference calls, when appropriate, to encourage the insurer, medical provider, and consumer to cooperatively solve the problem. The Mediator writes letters to request information and letters in support of appeals of benefit denials. The Mediator obtains direction as to legal action from the attorneys in the bureau and advice and direction on health and medical-related matters from the bureau's medical advisor.
The Mediator assists the Bureau Chief in various projects including reviewing proposed legislation, and planning, developing and implementing outreach activities. He or she educates and advises consumers regarding their rights as Health Care consumers and gives speeches to consumer groups regarding the rights and responsibilities of Health Care consumers.
Minimum Qualifications:
This position requires the completion of a bachelor's degree with major course work in sociology, a pre-law program, psychology, public administration, or a health-related field and 4 years of professional experience. Extensive experience in a related field may be substituted for the educational requirement. Attendance and the ability to maintain satisfactory working relationships with other employees and the general public are essential functions of this position.
Hours of Work: 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. (Monday - Friday)
