Job Description

The Loudoun County Sheriff's Office (LCSO) is seeking enthusiastic, experienced applicants with excellent interpersonal, time-management, and writing skills for a Civilian position as a Media Relations and Communications Manager. This position will be located at the Office of the Sheriff in Leesburg, VA and will report to the Director, Media Relations & Communications. This position will supervise one Civilian Public Information Officer, and one Sworn Public Information Officer, and will be expected to manage highly confidential information with utmost discretion and good judgment. This role will be expected to work outside of standard business hours, as needed which includes some evenings, weekends, and holidays. This position will need to respond to acute law enforcement on related incidents that may require communication with the news media and community at large, and to support the agency's presence at special events.

Job duties and supervision include, but are not limited to:

  • In coordination with the Director, develop and implement a community and stakeholder-oriented external communications plan that supports the agency's reputational, public safety, and public service objectives.
  • Respond to requests from news media sources promptly and effectively, and in coordination with the agency's Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) coordinator.
  • Write, edit, and publish the agency's news releases and social media posts related to law enforcement incidents and related matters, community events, and agency accomplishments, commemorations, and partnerships.
  • Produce and publish the agency's Quarterly Significant Report (SIR) to the Board of Supervisors, and Daily Incident Report (DIR).
  • Manage the agency's web site and social media platforms, to include social media posts and moderation.
  • Design graphics for use in the agency's printed and digital content, including but not limited to social media posts, serve as principal agency photographer, and maintain archives.
  • Provide consultation to and support for other agency units in planning and creating digital and other content for community events and recruitment.
  • Develop and evolve the agency's community outreach and news media-related initiatives to take advantage of evolving technologies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Media Relations & Communications.

Hiring salary commensurate with experience.

Job Requirements

Bachelor's degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Marketing, or related field; three (3) years of related work experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience; supervisory experience preferred.

Special Requirements

  • May be required to serve as the "on call" on a rotating basis.
  • May be required to work 24/7 during a County emergency performing alternate duties at alternate locations.
  • This position requires a work schedule that is highly flexible and may include evenings and weekends as well as during inclement weather.
