Job description

Tewksbury Hospital under the Department of Public Health (DPH), a 370 bed Joint Commission accredited hospital, is currently hiring for the position of Med Tech/Microbiologist II in the Clinical Laboratory.  The hospital provides a broad treatment of care and comfort to adults with medical and/or mental illnesses.

The selected med Tech/Microbiologist II candidate supervises and evaluates the performance of all Microbiologist I's and the weekend Laboratory Technician I.  During the absence or unavailability of the Laboratory Supervisor they will supervise laboratory operations and personnel.  The Med tech/Microbiologist II also performs routine hematological, chemical and bacteriological tests and phlebotomy on young adults, adults and geriatric adults with chronic medical and/or mental illness and employees.  He/she practices standard precautions, processes specimens, maintains the laboratory equipment used and safety of the work area, and utilizes the Laboratory Information System (LIS).  They are responsible for a department(s) within the Clinical Laboratory to include policy and procedure manual, review and tracking of quality control and corrective action, review and tracking of miscellaneous maintenance and cleaning, and general reporting to the Laboratory Supervisor. Laboratory staff are expected to maintain harmonious working relations with others in a team environment.

 

Please Note: This position is 24 hours per week. 

Monday: 8am - 12pm, Tuesday to Friday:  8am - 1pm.  Ability to work or cover weekends and holidays.

 

Duties and Responsibilities (these duties are a general summary and not all inclusive):

       Evaluates the performance of those directly supervised and recommends any disciplinary action needed to the Laboratory Supervisor.

       Supervises laboratory operations and personnel during the absence or unavailability of the Laboratory Supervisor.

       Determines training needs of the Microbiologist I's and provides that training, also trains new Microbiologist I staff.

       Completes the laboratory monthly schedule at least 10 days in advance.

       Performs testing for young adults, adults and geriatric adults with chronic medical and/or mental illness on various day shifts, weekends and holidays as assigned.

       Rotates through hematology, coagulation, chemistry, urinalysis, blood transfusion services and bacteriology on a routine basis. 

       Performs CBC's using the hematology analyzer, manual differentials and sed rates.

       Recognizes abnormal cell morphology and brings this to the attention of the Lab Supervisor and Lab Director.

       Performs PT's INRS using the coag analyzer, performs routine chemistry, drugs of abuse screening, immunoassay and therapeutic drug monitoring using the chemistry analyzer and performs various serological testing including RPRs and rubellas.

       Routine planting of bacteriological specimens.

       Performs screening tests such as Q scores and eye culture gram stains.

       Biochemical testing and identification and sensitivity testing of bacteria using the microbiology analyzer and related software.

       Utilizes the microbiological related software for data management in bacteriology.

       Performs routine urinalysis, fecal occult blood testing, pregnancy testing and rapid influenza testing.

       Releases results with the Laboratory Technician II.

       Directly oversees the QC, calibrations and preventive maintenance performed by the Laboratory Technician II. Also responsible for QC, calibrations, preventive maintenance and troubleshooting in each department.

       Performs proficiency testing.

       Collects blood from young adults, adults and geriatric adults with chronic medical and/or mental illness and employees as needed.

       Utilizes the LIS for patient data management, reporting, QC and other information as needed.

       Inventories supplies as assigned, practices standard precautions and maintains the safety of all work areas by following established policies and procedures for proper disinfection of the area and/or supplies and disposal of sharps and waste material.

       Responsible for assigned department to include policy and procedure manual, review and tracking of quality control and corrective action, review and tracking of miscellaneous maintenance and cleaning and reporting this information to the laboratory supervisor.

       Responsible for knowing, practicing and at least annually reviewing all established policies and procedures as they apply.

 

Required Qualifications:

 

       ASCP certification, 5 years of Microbiologist I experience and at minimum an Associate's degree in clinical chemistry, hematology, microbiology and biology is highly preferred.

       The candidate should have  experience/knowledge  in Microbiology (gram stain, QC, and organism identification, etc.)

       Working knowledge of bacteriology, chemistry, hematology and phlebotomy theory, techniques and tests in a medical, clinical, or hospital laboratory.

       Phlebotomy experience.

       Skilled in performing accurate and precise tests and analyses.

       Ability to utilize a laboratory information system.

       Ability to instruct others in laboratory techniques.

       Working knowledge of laboratory safety and standard precautions.

       Knowledge of safety techniques used in handling and transportation of laboratory specimens.

       Ability supervise staff and instruct and communicate through written and verbal methods; and establish and maintain harmonious working relationships.

       Based on the assignment, applicants must meet related Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act (CLIA) requirements for High Complexity Testing. Incumbents may be required to have a current and valid motor vehicle driver's license at a class level specific to assignment.

First consideration will be given to those applicants that apply within the first 14 days.   Minimum Entrance Requirements:   Applicants must have (A) at least three (3) years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, professional or academic research experience in microbiology, molecular biology, or medical laboratory technology, or (B) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.   Based on assignment, applicants must meet related Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act (CLIA) requirements for High Complexity Testing.   Incumbents may be required to have a current and valid motor vehicle driver's license at a class level specific to assignment.   Substitutions:    I. A Bachelor's degree with a major in microbiology, molecular biology, biology, medical laboratory technology, or equivalent scientific field may be substituted for two (2) years of the required experience.   II. A Master's degree or higher with a major in microbiology, molecular biology, biology or equivalent scientific field may be substituted for the required experience.
