JOB SUMMARY:   

The Med-Surg Educator/Quality Evaluator will serve as a resource person for all Med-Surg staff with input from managers and supervisors, the Educator/Evaluator will be responsible for coordinating training and orientation for all new Med-Surg staff as well as keeping all staff aware of standards of best practice related to their role.  The Med-Surg Educator/Quality Evaluator helps lead and coordinate the development, implementation and evaluation of OSS Health Med-Surg performance improvement and ensures compliance with all Joint Commission, Department of Health and other regulatory standards for all outpatient areas.

 

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION:

Education:

  • Licensed and currently registered as a Registered Nurse in the State of Pennsylvania.

Qualifications:

  • CPR certification required. ACLS, BLS.
  • Orthopaedic Nursing Certification preferred. Must obtain within one year of employment.
  • Obtain upon hire, if currently does not have a Membership to the National Association of Orthopedic Nurses (NAON) and the American Nurses Association (ANA).
  • Clinical expertise in hospital Medical Surgical setting required (Orthopaedic experience preferred).
  • Background in education and teaching experience preferred.
  • Ability to assess educational needs and design and develop responsible curricula.
  • Ability to be flexible and to adapt to the changing roles and responsibilities of education at OSS Health.
  • Excellent computer skills required, including Microsoft Office, Excel and Windows. (Cerner experience preferred).
  • Demonstrates the ability to stay up to date on Joint Commission standards and performance improvement techniques.
  • Maintains current on nursing best practices, clinical guidelines and national standards.
  • Valid driver’s license is required.
  • Excellent communication skills required (verbal & written) to interact with individuals at all levels of the organization and write clear and concise routine reports. Skilled at designing forms, retrieving data and effectively expressing results of such to management and staff. The ability of present effectively to  small or large groups.
  • Demonstrate communication skills necessary to explain complex medical and scientific concepts in a manner that’s easy to understand and provide feedback on staff learning assignments.
  • Must be able to work independently and with minimal supervision to handle problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to manage multiple complex and diverse projects simultaneously.
  • High-level interpersonal skills to give constructive feedback and serve as a trusted educational advisor to staff. Must understand and respect confidentiality.

 

 

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Drives the corporation’s performance improvement process, identifies performance trends and prioritizes and recommends improvements.  Leads the implementation of the performance improvement program that meets the needs of patients, staff and external agencies.
  • Initiates skills development programs within the parameters of established care models; monitors trends and implements educational strategies to ensure compliance with quality standards and parameters.
  • Collaborates with medical practitioners to incorporate nursing processes into the plan of care for the Orthopaedic patient.
  • Collaborates with medical providers, patient care staff, and unit management in the planning, implementation, and delivery of educational curricula.
  • Facilitates evidence-based research within the Orthopaedic specialty.
  • Creates, revises, and reviews Med-Surg nursing policies, on an as needed and yearly bases.
  • Manages the Med-Surg orientation program, in the classroom and acute care setting.
  • Works with the Med-Surg unit to lead, develop, facilitate, and manage educational needs and content for both patient and staff education.  Develops and manages community education programs as assigned.
  • Responsible for creating and driving the annual clinical competency program.
  • Educates Med-Surg staff in the use of new equipment, supplies, and instruments; coordinates in-service training and workshops for appropriate and coordinates the evaluation of trial products.
  • Assists in CQI programs, helping to ensure that necessary requirements as outlined by policy and procedure, PA DOH, and Joint Commission are met.
  • Resource for continuing education credits for the Med-Surg Unit.
  • Represents education department on the Med-Surg Unit oriented committees.  Works within educator role for the Med-Surg Unit to develop & facilitate processes and tools related to outcome objectives from committees including FMEA, RCA, & sentinel events.
  • Assists with the development/management of departmental policy and procedure. Performs duties in accordance with established clinic policies and procedures, OSS objectives, performance improvement activities, safety, confidentiality, environmental and infection control standards.

 

  • Participates in the process of continuing education, both as a provider and recipient of services.  Attends all mandatory in-service programs and maintains professional education requirements.  Maintains professional certifications and memberships.
  • Assists in maintaining a safe working environment within the Med-Surg Unit, adhering to all safety policies and procedures.
  • Implements performance improvement plans and consistent training and follow-up with Med-Surg Unit staff.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or requested.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

No direct reports.

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to exchange information on factual matters, communicate in a variety of manners with patients, staff and explain policies of the organization. 

 

Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form.  Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

 

 

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Light physical effort; some standing, walking, bending, reaching, stooping; manual dexterity to operate keyboard and other equipment; detail oriented; able to maintain a pleasant and courteous demeanor under all circumstances.

 

The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
