Standard Steel is a leading manufacturer of forged steel wheels and axles for freight railcars, locomotives and passenger railcars. It is the only producer of forged steel wheels for railcars and locomotives in North America. Customers include major Class I railroads in North America, freight railcar builders, railcar and locomotive maintenance shops, the Amtrak national railroad, locomotive builders and regional transit authorities.
Standard Steel, LLC, and its affiliated companies were purchased by Sumitomo Metal Industries, Ltd. and Sumitomo Corporation in 2011, but the existing facility has been producing forgings since 1795. In 2012, Sumitomo Metal Industries, Ltd. merged with Nippon Steel Corporation to become Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corporation, the majority owner of Standard Steel.
Standard Steel's manufacturing plant is located at 500 North Walnut Street in Burnham, Pennsylvania.

Job Description

Job Function/Purpose:

The individual selected for this role will be expected to properly perform all types of Mechanical Maintenance. Performs mechanical work throughout the facility, including, but not limited to, installing, repairing, welding, troubleshooting, inspecting, and maintaining all machines mechanically and limited repair electrically. The incumbent must be able to work from Engineering drawings, sketches, diagrams, and operating manuals. Incumbent must also be able to work any shift, including overtime and weekend work.

Responsibilities:

  • Performs duties throughout the plant as directed by Management/Supervision, Shift-Leader or Work Leader.
  • Maintains machinery and equipment in proper operating condition. (Including machine tools).
  • Inspects equipment and identifies issues which need corrected.
  • Identifies mechanical problems by observing equipment in operation or by other methods based on mechanical knowledge.
  • Disassembles equipment to gain access to defective parts and repairs or replaces parts. Notifies supervision if parts are not available.
  • Reassembles equipment, making necessary adjustments to ensure proper operation.
  • Erects, adjusts and dismantles equipment as required.
  • Lubricates, verifies fluid levels and cleans equipment.
  • Repairs, adjusts and maintains mechanical drive systems, including but not limited to chain drives, belt drives, gear trains etc.
  • Repairs, replaces and maintains all types of bearings.
  • Verifies proper fits, clearances and backlashes on equipment and makes necessary adjustments.
  • Performs electric arc and oxyacetylene welding and burning required to fabricate, erect, dismantle, repair, etc. any structural steel and iron, machinery, equipment, etc., throughout the plant.
  • Is knowledgeable of and employs safe rigging techniques.
  • Erects, dismantles and paints structural steel buildings, structures, metal roofing, siding, gutters, flashing, etc.
  • Erects, repairs and dismantles furnaces. (Other than brickwork).
  • Fabricates structural steel for buildings and equipment.
  • Loads and unloads heavy equipment, material and product on and off of cars and production equipment.
  • Duties require thorough knowledge of safe loads for scaffolding, slings, cables, etc.
  • Lashes cable, chains, slings etc. to load and unload heavy equipment.
  • Fabricates, installs, dismantles and repairs, all types of air, water, steam, gas, coal and oil pipe, pipefittings and hoses throughout the plant.
  • Required to use pipe cutting, bending, threading, drilling, grinding, welding and burning equipment in fabricating work.
  • Locates position of concealed pipe by measuring and detection techniques.
  • Required to be thoroughly familiar with and to use various types of pipefitters and steamfitters testing equipment.
  • Makes lead caulks in iron pipe.
  • Makes solder joints in lead and copper pipe.
  • Makes rubber and composition gaskets as required.
  • Repairs and repacks valves when required.
  • Required to perform all plumbing work necessary throughout the plant.
  • Fabricates, installs, and maintains in good repair, all sheet metal work throughout the plant, such as machine guards, roof cornices, ventilators, metal roofing, shelves, tanks, piping ducts, etc.
  • Required to lay out work for fabricating.
  • Required to operate all sheet metal fabricating equipment in our sheet metal shop.
  • Capable of troubleshooting, repairing and maintaining any mobile equipment or other gasoline or diesel internal combustion engine driven equipment used throughout the plant.
  • Is capable of repairing engines, transmissions, rear ends, etc. using all tools, gauges and equipment required.
  • Makes repairs, adjustments and replacements to ignition and electrical systems on mobile and gas/diesel driven equipment.
  • Washes, waxes, polishes and paints equipment.
  • Checks and charges batteries. Operates equipment as necessary to test, or in emergency, for other purposes. Installs new parts and attachments.
  • Tests antifreeze in radiators and adds any required.
  • Installs and removes tire chains. Attaches and detaches snowplows and other attachments to mobile equipment.
  • Possesses thorough knowledge of all types of gasoline, diesel and propane gas powered equipment, inspection standards, equipment capacities and the proper service and maintenance standards required.
  • Is a licensed driver with driving experience under all types of traffic conditions.
  • Repairs, adjusts, installs and dismantles hydraulic systems on all machinery and equipment throughout the plant.
  • Dismantles precision hydraulic and pneumatic equipment, consistent with accepted practices, examines to determine cause of failure or malfunctioning, repairs salvable parts and makes replacements where necessary. Repairs or replaces worn components to restore to original condition. Performs bench tests to confirm proper function.
  • Reassembles precision parts in accordance with specifications stipulated by the manufacturer.
  • Analyzes and solves problems of malfunctioning systems by use of hydraulic schematic circuits and other troubleshooting methods.
  • Possesses knowledge of oil and fluids, accepted terminology, characteristics and application as well as basic electronics knowledge to facilitate troubleshooting and repair of computerized controls, valves, etc.
  • Recognizes the operation and function of individual hydraulics components (pumps, valves, cylinders, servos, pressure relief valves, sequencing valves, etc.), and the contribution each makes to the functioning of the entire system.
  • Possesses working knowledge of force, pressure and flow computations to effectively and correctly specify sizes and quality of hydraulic components consistent with use and in accordance with good hydraulic practice.
  • Operates equipment to test and verify proper operating efficiency. Adapts parts and components to obtain desired results.
  • Required to use all tools common to the trade including micrometers and other precision tools and measuring devices, including electronic measuring and detection equipment.
  • Reports problems and/or repairs, both complete and incomplete, to the supervisor or leader.
  • Maintains daily logs and other documentation (records), including job reporting, as required by supervision.
  • Maintains contact with supervisor or leader via pager, telephone, text, email, direct contact, etc.
  • Works with others in performing all types of major and minor maintenance and repair work, and does so with a high degree of skill and efficiency and with limited direct supervision.
  • Performs the basic skills of other crafts when required in the performance of their regular job duties.
  • Is knowledgeable and understands all work rules and safe work practices and rules, and adheres to the same.
  • Must be familiar enough with the operation of equipment being repaired or maintained, to be able to ascertain that it is in efficient and safe operating condition. May be required to test operate the equipment.
  • Operates cranes, high reaches, lift trucks and other mobile equipment as required.
  • Keeps work area in a clean, safe and orderly condition, including cleaning work area after job is complete.
  • Assists as required or assigned, other classifications within the Maintenance Department.

Tools and Equipment Used:

Any and all tools necessary for repairs or installation of equipment or building such as, wrenches, drill press, hand tools or power tools, calipers, block and tackle, air press, hoist, cranes, forklifts man lift, rigging, safety equipment, locks, cables, welding machines, pipe threaders, grinders, insulated screw drivers, pipe wrenches, voltmeters, ammeter, Allen wrenches, socket set, wire stripers, and a oxy acetylene torch.

Physical Demands:

The physical demands described here are representative of requirements typical for this job, including, but not limited to; stand, walk, climb, use ladders and stairs, lift/carry loads at a weight and frequency deemed safe, bend/stoop/twist/crawl, and be able to grasp or squeeze using hands/fingers. Some work shall be performed overhead, and some at floor level, and may be in tight quarters.
