Union Tank Car Company is seeking new employees at our full-service rail tank car repair shop in Altoona, Pennsylvania to assist in various departments as needed by plant production. The Company's regulatory, engineering and commercial expertise make UTLX the preferred source of railcars and services for many of its customers. We are looking for a Mechanical Integrity Specialist to perform advanced NDT processes, this ensures the required work is completed in compliance with industry standards and customer requirements. The Mechanical Integrity Specialist will also supervise basic NDT processes being conducted.
Job Responsibilities:
This is a general description of the essential functions of this job. This is not an exhaustive list and employees in these classifications frequently may be required to perform additional duties. Not all classifications will be required to perform all job functions.

  • Supervises and audits NDT work being performed by hourly employees.
  • Performs advanced Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) inspections on freight and tank car equipment.
  • Ensures all inspections are performed in a manner and released product meets all regulatory, company and customer requirements.
  • Ensures the required and most effective NDT methods and techniques are utilized and performed in accordance with established procedures and programs.
  • Responsible for NDT equipment calibration, are maintained, and operational.
  • Provides technical guidance, hands-on training and mentoring of other NDT staff.
  • Ensures all required documentation is accurate and completed in a timely manner.
  • Strives to maintain proficiency by updating technical knowledge of NDT and other Special Processes.

Knowledge and Skills:
  • This position requires a high school diploma or equivalent required, technical/post-secondary education a plus.
  • Minimum of 5-7 years related work experience railcar repair or manufacturing preferred.
  • Ability to: provide technical NDT guidance, review inspection data, interpret and apply codes/standards/specification required.
  • Having held certifications, or having completed training related to NDT processes a plus.
  • Additional training in inspection processes will be required.
  • In addition, this position requires a working knowledge of computers, including familiarity with the AS400, and Outlook, various customer systems and Microsoft Office software packages.
  • Possess reading and comprehension skills associated with Fleet Repair Standards, Governing Regulations, drawings, and catalogs.
  • General mechanical aptitude and ability to use railroad gauges, testing techniques, & test equipment necessary for rail car inspections.
  • Have vision correctable to 20/20 for inspection activities.

Working Conditions:
  • Could be scheduled to work on an off shift.
  • Average care required avoiding injury while handling or positioning material.
  • Climb ladders to heights of approximately 14 feet, bend, crawl, stoop, squat, kneel, and stretch to perform tank car inspections.
  • Enter tank cars via a manway opening approximately 20 inches in diameter.
  • Be able to tolerate heights, confined spaces, & working through periods of inclement weather.
  • Be willing and able to wear safety equipment such as safety shoes, hard hats, air fed respirators, body harnesses, and safety glasses.
