Internship Overview: The R&D Mechanical Engineering Intern will work with engineering teams to contribute to the development of mechanical/electromechanical sub-systems or components for products under development. Assignments are broad in nature, usually requiring initiative, originality, ingenuity and excellent problem-solving skills. The R&D Mechanical Engineering Intern will also be responsible for conceiving, designing, and building unique test fixtures and mechanisms that will exercise key sub-systems of product designs during the Concept and Design/Development phases of product development.
The R&D Mechanical Engineering Intern will work closely with experienced R&D Engineers to contribute to lab improvements and product development. This will include the following major tasks:
- Consult with engineering teams to design and develop test and assembly fixtures as necessary.
- Create 3D CAD models and 3D prints for prototype development.
- Create design descriptions (drawings, theory of operation, operator instructions, etc.) and submit for release via CRCOs, as required.
- Construct experimental and/or development circuitry, mechanical assemblies, or complete prototype models.
- Perform bench and in-house engineering/application testing as needed on prototype, pre-production, and clinical devices.
- Research and work with outside vendors to supply components and services needed to build our concept devices.
Minimum Qualifications:
Required Education & Experience:
- Sophomore level standing or higher in engineering course work leading to a Bachelor of Science degree in an engineering discipline, Mechanical Engineering preferred, from a four-year college or university.
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Experience in Creo/Pro-E/SolidWorks or similar CAD tools.
- Demonstrated interpersonal, verbal/written communication, organizational and analytical skills.
- High attention to detail and accuracy.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience developing and operating lab testing equipment.
- Programming experience using single board control systems such as Arduino or Raspberry Pi.
- Knowledge of motion control mechanisms including stepper motors, electrical or pneumatic solenoids and cylinders, limit detection, etc.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to sit, stand, and/or walk for 8 hrs./day.
