SUMMARY:
Since 2016, Salas O’Brien has been working on the largest mobile robotic system in the world alongside world-class roboticists at National Robotics Engineering Center (NREC) of Carnegie Mellon University. Sponsored by the Marine Design Center at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the Concrete Mat Laying Robotic System will preserve the channel of Mississippi River, thereby saving the surrounding cities and infrastructure from disastrous flooding and erosion.
Salas O’Brien is hiring a Mechanical Engineer Intern to join our tight-knit team to bring this mechanical marvel to life. Since completing the fourth phase of prototyping in 2020, the team has focused on the final, full-scale water-based system. The Mechanical Engineer Intern must be passionate about doing what has never been done before as they test, implement, and maintain electro-mechanical systems for robotic control and automation of the Mat Laying Robotic System. Through their efforts of troubleshooting system problems and engineering unique solutions, they will contribute to a truly novel robot with a powerful purpose.
The position will be based in Pittsburgh, PA with potential travel to test onsite at a shipyard in Houma, Louisiana.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- United States citizenship: Verification required upon hire.
- Education: Currently enrolled in a Mechanical Engineering Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree at a four-year ABET university or college.
- Experience: Relevant coursework
- Mechanical engineering and integration background, with experience developing on teams and keeping on schedule.
- Must be able to work up to 40 hours/week during the summer months.
- Familiarity with C++, testing, and debugging skills in a Linux environment, scripting languages. Ability to learn on-the-job to further develop these skills.
- Familiarization or previous experience with electo-mechanical integration, robotic sensors, or perception.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Mechanical assembly of subsystems IAW design documentation.
- Execute extensive testing, verification, and validation on robotic subsystems.
- Draft documentation manuals for operations and maintenance and complete testing documentation.
- Debug and determine root causes for issues in the field and clearly communicate resolutions and workarounds to other team members.
