Position Summary
In this role, you’ll be placed into a new product development engineering group to apply what you’ve learned in school and participate in Banner’s continued growth in the industrial automation and LED Lighting market by developing products alongside our talented engineering teams.
2 Mechanical Engineering Internships are available based onsite at either our Plymouth, MN and our Brooklyn Park, MN location. Both positions report to an Engineering Manager onsite at each location. The internship is working full-time hours during summer months (June, July, and August) with the possibility of extending part-time during the school year.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Performs qualification tests to ensure conformance to specifications, and evaluating designs through virtual, stress, thermal, and tolerance analysis.
- Resolves part and process issues by working with production engineering, manufacturing department, and suppliers.
- Works with global suppliers on qualifying mechanical parts made from a variety of processes including injection molding, machining, metal-forming, and die -casting.
- Develop concepts, then design and document components and assemblies following efficient and reliable departmental processes for manufacturing.
- Design and acquire prototype parts for internal evaluation.
- Design, source and build fixtures to aid in product development and technology research.
- Translate product specifications and requirements into effective product designs.
- Assist in the development and execution of product test plans.
- Integrate design for manufacturability and assembly (DFM/DFA) processes to reduce product cost.
- Manage product documentation including Bills of Materials (BOMs), design verification reports, Engineering Change Orders (ECOs), and process and design Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEAs)
- Adhere to compliance regulations established by various agencies (CE, UL, etc.)
- Other duties as assigned.

Required
- Currently attending a credited Institution working on a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field
- Experience using solid modeling tools (Solidworks, Creo, etc.)
- Strong mechanical aptitude and willingness to learn advanced design/manufacturing techniques
Preferred
- Experience with Additive Manufacturing (3D printing)
- Experience in product design for industrial applications
- Experience with Design of Experiments (DOE), Finite Element Analysis (FEA), Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and statistical analysis
- Experience with assembly techniques including ultrasonic welding, insert molding, chip on board (COB), surface mount technology (SMT) and epoxy encapsulation
