The XPS FoamMechanical Engineer is accountable for executing medium and large Capital Delivery projects for the XPS Foam Business and providing technical support to the XPS Foam manufacturing including operations, maintenance, and process support.
The Engineer is expected to drive improvements in safety, productivity, and quality, while reducing costs and assuring EH&S compliance. Responsibilities include translating needs to engineering calculations, specifications, scopes, estimates and design packages; preparing documentation for procurement of equipment, contracts for installation; providing start up and support of the systems; and analyzing options to obtain maximum returns on capital investment through innovation and application of new technology.
The Mechanical Engineer is providing manufacturing support as a Subject Matter Expertise on the XPS Foam process, maintaining OC IP for the XPS Foam equipment and system design, supporting TPM efforts, supporting XPS Foam production sites, and supporting blowing agent safety systems to meet OSHA PSM design requirements. The Mechanical Engineer will also support the maintenance spare parts strategy for the XPS Foam business and definition of key process equipment spare parts. The Mechanical Engineer will support R&D plant trials, product development, and pilot new equipment.

Location & Travel: Tallmadge, OH - Hybrid with up to 30% travel
Span of Control:
- Manages 9 - 12 contract engineers in design and implementation.
- Manages multiple turnkey contracts on an annual basis.
- Typically leads multiple projects running concurrently in different stages.
- Participant in the XPS Foam Maintenance Leader Network
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
- Execute medium and large Capital Delivery projects for the XPS Foam Business.
- Develop specifications for procurement and design of XPS Foam process equipment.
- Supervise designers and design firms in the development of drawing packages for process system equipment including hardware selection, drawings, layouts, and interface diagrams.
- Develop cost estimates and scopes of work for internal engineering, external engineering firms, and deliver capital equipment.
- Coordinate with various process discipline counterparts on process interfaces, systems integration, and equipment installations (Civil, Electrical, HVAC, etc.)
- Interface with project managers to optimize definition of scopes for mechanical systems to maximize RONA based on the understanding of total XPS Foam production engineering schemes.
- Lead sub-projects of a larger capital program towards consistent execution and continuous optimization globally for XPS Foam.
- Lead engineers, internal process groups, or external companies to execute the design, implementation, and commissioning of process systems.
- Provide technical support to the XPS Foam manufacturing including operations, maintenance, process support and to the XPS Foam R&D team.
- Ensure the Owens Corning safety culture is maintained through the design.
- Lead preliminary safety, risk and failure analysis of new technology, trials, and design changes.
- Lead continuous improvement and benchmarking through all aspects of system engineering including project management, cost and schedule performance, life expectancy and extension of all assets, technical details, constructability, all to deliver and improve upon asset reliability and return on net assets.
- Communicate technical concepts and results to an audience of variable technical and process understanding clearly.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- BS or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering with a minimum of 5 years of manufacturing/design experience in the XPS Foam business or related industries; OR 10+ years of manufacturing/design experience in XPS Foam business or related industries.
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:
- Project Engineering
- Manufacturing / Plant Engineering
- Proven track record of successfully managing definition, design, and execution of projects
- Design and specification of process equipment systems
- Process development expertise
- Solid experience of OSHA and PSM regulations relating to industrial equipment and process design and construction processes
- Experience working across global teams
- TPM knowledge and experience
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of XPS foam production engineering schemes with experience in:
- Extrusion Systems
- Material Handling Systems
- Feed Systems
- Heat Transfer Systems
- Continuous Process Equipment
- Finishing Equipment
- Packaging Equipment
- Knowledge of safety regulations, process control systems
- Knowledgeable in the development of drawings.
- Experience in equipment check out, debugging, start-up / commissioning, and troubleshooting.
- Ability to provide complex and innovative solutions to design and construction problems.
- Proficient with AutoCAD Design and Inventor Modeling Software and/or other related engineering design packages.
- Strong computer skills in software applications required for communicating, analyzing, and reporting on projects.
- Ability to clearly communicate technical concepts and results to an audience of variable technical and process understanding.
- 6 Sigma Black or Green belt (preferred not required)
- Experience in Domestic & International Project execution
- Demonstrated drive and initiative to complete tasks proactively and with limited oversight with multiple concurrent projects and priorities.
