JOB TITLE: Mechanic - VehicleMaintenance
POSITION GRADE/LEVEL: Grade 5 - Full-Time - temporary-to-regular benefiteligible - Non-exempt
RATE RANGE:Pay range is $25.63 to $33.24 per hour, in 8 steps.
LOCATION:Duxbury DPW, Highway
WORK SCHEDULE:40 hours per week, plus additional hours as participation in Town-wide weatheror emergency operations is required.
SUPERVISION: Leadperson,Vehicle Maintenance
NUMBER OF OPENINGS: 1
1. Nature of Work: Performs skilled work within the Departmentof Public Works as determined and assigned by a Manager or Superintendent inthe Public Works Department Performs skilled work within the VehicleMaintenance department.
2. SupervisionReceived: Receives instructions andwork specifications from Leadman, Foreman, Operations Manager or DPW Director andcommunicates to fellow workers. Works under the supervision of an employee of ahigher grade who assigns work, reviews performance for skill and efficiency,and assists in cases of difficulty.
3. SupervisoryResponsibility: Supervises temporaryor seasonal employees as assigned.
4. Confidentiality: Employee has regular access to confidentialinformation of the department. Confidentiality must be maintained with regard to this information inaccordance with Department Policy and the Public Records Act.
5. Accountability: Consequences or errors, missed deadlines orpoor judgment may include adverse public relations, monetary loss, legalrepercussions, labor/material costs, personal injury, jeopardize programs, anddanger to public health/safety.
6. Judgment: Guidelines may be given verbally, or throughadministrative or organizational policies, or directives. Employee is expected to weigh efficiency and relativepriorities in performing tasks.
7. Complexity: The work consists of the practicalapplication of a variety of concepts, practices and specialized techniquesrelating to custodial and maintenance work.
8. Nature andPurpose of Public Contact: Employeeinteracts frequently with Town employees and the public. Customer service skills are requiredinvolving courtesy, tact, and diplomacy.
9. EssentialFunctions: The essential functionsor duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various typeof work that may be performed. Theomission of specific statement of duties does not exclude them from theposition if the work is similar, related, or logical assignment to theposition.
1. Uses extensive knowledge and skill for repair, maintenanceand modification of truck earth-moving equipment and automobiles used in thevarious divisional work assignments.
2. Analyses malfunctions and performs routine maintenancework as necessary
3. Suggests modifications to equipment for safer and moreefficient operation, constructs and installs as directed.
4. Operates equipment and performs tasks required oflower-rated employees
5. Obtains tools, equipment and additional manpower in accordancewith task requirements
6. May be required to perform specialized tasks not assignedto lower ranked employees
7. Performs proper maintenance and inspections on theequipment and as needed
8. Operation of and ordinary maintenance of equipment(trucks, tractors, power mowers and other tools of the trade), instructsemployees in the correct and proper usage of same
9. Maintains vehicle records
10. Createsplans and work schedules assuring that work is performed in a safe andefficient manner and that all tools equipment and materials are available andwell maintained
11. Mustpossess considerable knowledge of Vehicle Maintenance practices, methods andprocedures and a demonstrated ability to lead and motivate other employees.
12. Must havethe ability to deal tactfully and effectively with fellow employees,supervisors and general public.
13. Participatesin town-wide snow and ice removal operations
14. Trainsnew employees in performing assigned duties.
10. Recommended Minimum Qualification
Education and Experience: High School or Technical School diploma orG.E.D. with three (3) years of related work experience required, AssociatesDegree in advanced automotive technology preferred; or any equivalentcombination of education, training and experience which provides the requiredknowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential function of theposition.
Special Requirements: Valid Massachusetts Driver's License,Hydraulics 2B, and Class B (CDL) license. Advanced Automotive Technologytraining/education, Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) or similarcertifications, e.g. ASE Automobile (A1 - A8), Automobile Service Consultant(C1), Automobile Maintenance and Light Repair (G1), Automobile Advanced EnginePerformance Specialist (L1), and Automobile Parts Specialist (P2), ASEMaster Automobile Technician Certificate, ASE Master Heavy Duty Truck TechnicianCertificate, ASE Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) Certification. ASE or MACA/C Recycle Certificate, Specialized training in brakes, hydraulics, enginerepair, and electronics preferred.
11. Knowledge, Abilities and Skill:
  • 1. Skill in performing tasks associated with duties.
  • 2. Skill in the use of tools of the trade and operation ofrequired equipment of the trade.
  • 3. Skill in the basic usage of computers.
  • 4. Ability to clearly and concisely communicateinstructions to others.
  • 5. Ability to work harmoniously with fellow workers in agroup task assignment.
  • 6. Ability to motivate others to performance and helpothers to solve work problems

12. Work Environment: The nature of duties may involve continuouspresence of unpleasant or irritating elements, such as noise, odors, chemicalfumes, dust, smoke, heat, cold, oil, dirt, or grease. Work is performed indoors and outdoorsregardless of weather conditions.
13. Occupational Risks: Duties regularly present potential risks ofinjuries from improper exposure that could result in loss of time fromwork. Examples of injuries include burnsfrom chemical, muscular strains, falls from heights in excess of three (3)feet. Special safety precautions,training, or protective clothing such as gowns, coats, gloves, glasses, hats,or boots may be required.
14. Physical and Mental Requirements: The physical demands described here arerepresentative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully performthe essential function of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals withdisabilities to perform the position's essential functions.
Physical Demands: Work requires regular physical strength andeffort daily, such as, frequently lifting heavy objects up to 50 lbs., carryingobjects, occasionally 100 lbs., and stacking them. In addition, pulling, pushing, standing, orwalking for the full workday may be involved.
15. Motor Skills: Duties involve close hand and eyecoordination and physical dexterity. Manipulation and motor control may require extreme accuracy.
16. Visual Demands: Visual demands include reading documents forgeneral understanding, routinely reviewing non-written materials such asinstrumentation for analytical purposes and the need for color vision.
