GENERAL PURPOSE: Under general supervision, maintains, repairs and adjusts City vehicles, equipment and machinery, in accordance with all safety regulations and procedures.
PRIMARYDUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Performs preventive maintenance on City vehicles to maximize the effective life cycle of the equipment.
- Diagnoses mechanical and electrical problems on vehicles and equipment; performs maintenance and repairs within scope of authority, and in accordance with all safety regulations and procedures.
- Performs all phases of basic automotive maintenance, including tune-ups, trouble shooting and repairs, tire repairs, electrical diagnostics, brake work, engine diagnostics, hydraulics and lubrications.
- Diagnoses and repairs vehicle component systems, engines, transmissions, power trains, braking, and steering systems; uses technical manuals and computer equipment to diagnose and correct vehicle problems.
- Repairs electrical, fuel supply, brakes, air conditioning and engine cooling systems; performs emergency repairs in the field as required; installs auxiliary and specialized equipment; verifies equipment meets safety standards before returning to fleet operations.
- Performs mandated annual safety inspections for City vehicles.
- Performs welding tasks, fabricating and repairing metal parts and components.
- Orders parts as needed; maintains shop, yard, and equipment in clean and orderly condition.
- Maintains work orders, records and logs services performed and general vehicle information.
- Utilizes proper safety precautions in all work performed; recognizes, avoids, and reports unsafe acts, conditions, accidents and injuries.
- Participate in continuing education and certification opportunities.
- Provide training and assistance to any Fleet Services employee
- Supervisory duties in the absence of Supervisor, Level 3 and Level 4 Mechanics
- Complete additional training above Level 1 Mechanic 1 requirements
- Hours: Monday through Friday 7:00am-4:00pm.
- Regular and timely attendance is required.
- Other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience:
High School diploma or equivalent; and two years' experience in vehicle maintenance; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Minimum of two ASE Certifications or equivalent experience.
Required Licenses or Certifications:
- Must possess a valid Texas Driver License. Class A/B CDL may be required. If a Class A/B CDL is obtained, held, and utilizedduring the course of employment, employee will be subject to DOT guidelines and regulations.
- Applicants with an out-of-state driver license must provide an original certified driving record from the state of driving licensure.
- Safety Inspector certification from Texas Department of Public Safety is required within six months of hire.
Required Knowledge of:
- Federal and state traffic and safety regulations.
- Methods, tools and equipment used in repair and maintenance of vehicles.
- City safety rules and regulations, occupational hazards and safety precautions.
- Safety practices in a workshop environment.
Required Skill in:
- Safe and effective repair and maintenance of vehicles according to City standards.
- Organizational techniques with physical inventories and work scheduling.
- Inspecting, diagnosing and repairing mechanical, brake, fuel and electrical problems in gasoline and diesel vehicles.
- Reading and interpreting technical manuals and specifications.
- Safe use of power and hand tools, and chemicals, lubricants and cleaning compounds.
- Closely following verbal and written instructions and procedures.
- Understand and adhere to City policies, procedures, and safety rules.
Physical Demands / Work Environment:
- Must have own tools sufficient to perform the daily repairs and duties.
- Work is performed in repair and maintenance facilities.
- Moderate physical demands; strength sufficient to lift and move items weighing up to seventy-nine (79) pounds; may be exposed to safety hazards and dangerous tools and equipment.
- Requires vision capacity to perform fine calibrations and differentiate between colored wires.
