JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
Penn State Extension and the Department of Animal Science is seeking a highly motivated and organized Meat Science Extension Associate to provide support with Meat Science Extension activities. Specifically, this position will support the organization, instruction and expansion of the Penn State Butcher School, a certified meat processing apprenticeship in Pennsylvania. The successful candidate will be responsible for collecting, maintaining and analyzing data for this effort by Extension and the Department to support workforce development in the field of meat processing. In addition, the following tasks may be needed: Organize data for use in reports, documents and presentations; Coordinate various Meat Science related activities surrounding the butcher school and Meat Science Extension; Coordinate ordering, maintaining appropriate inventory, storage and maintenance of supplies and equipment for butcher school apprentices; assist with budget and financial models of the programming and supervise wage payroll staff.
This position typically requires a minimum of a master's degree or higher in Meat Science, Animal Science, Food Science or other related field of study, plus 2 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in meat processing and food industry is strongly preferred. A working knowledge of HACCP systems, ServSafe and various computer skills, including but not limited to, word processing, spreadsheet and data manipulation and presentation software is strongly preferred. An expertise in multi-species slaughter, carcass fabrication, further processing, food safety and product formulation and development is desirable. The successful candidate will demonstrate positive human relations and effective communication skills necessary to work effectively with colleagues, industry representatives, government officials, and the general public. Experience working with diverse audiences is desirable.
Since this position requires that you operate a motor vehicle as part of your job duties, successful completion of a motor vehicle records check will be required in addition to standard background checks. This is a limited-term appointment funded for three years from date of hire with good possibility of re-funding. Extramural funding sources will be sought after to support the position further.
