JOB SUMMARY
The Elementary PE Instructor is to supervise and teach elementary students; ensuring compliance with program requirements; assisting with parent education programs; and coordinating communications with parents.
MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
All positions require selected candidates to be fingerprinted and successfully pass a criminal background check.
Additional minimum required qualifications for this position are
  1. High school diploma or a recognized equivalent.
  2. Per Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), interested applicants must be Highly Qualified to be considered for the position. One of the following three items:
  • completed at least two years at an accredited higher education institution (minimum 48 semester hours), or
  • obtained an associates (or higher) degree from an accredited higher education institution, or
  • satisfied a rigorous state or local assessment (Parapro Assessment/PRAXIS ETS) with a score of 460 or higher.

The higher education institution official transcripts, or college diploma, or a copy of the Paraprofessional Assessment must be provided with your application or upon a contingent offer of employment.
  1. Ability to administer first aid; apply assessment instruments; prepare and maintain accurate records;
  2. Ability to lead small groups; learn through play; communicate orally and in writing; and adhere to safety practices.
  3. Ability to perform basic math; read technical information, compose a variety of documents, and/or facilitate group discussions; and analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions.
  4. Able to schedule activities and/or meetings; gather, collate, and/or classify data; and use basic, job related equipment.
  5. Knowledge of classroom management skills necessary to effectively monitor and supervise Elementary students; operate physical education equipment and playground activities using standardized methods; operating standard office equipment including using pertinent software applications; and preparing and maintaining accurate records.
  6. Able to independent interpret guidelines; communicate with diverse groups; maintain confidentiality; set priorities; work as part of a team; work with frequent interruptions; adapt to changing work priorities; being attentive to detail;
  7. Speak, read, write, analyze, understand, and follow written and verbal communication in English including grammar and punctuation; listen to, and understand information and ideas presented verbally and in writing.
  8. Ability to work independently and with others in a wide variety of circumstances
  9. Ability to work with diverse groups and individuals to meet goals and objectives.
  10. Ability to analyze issues and create action plans for the purpose of problem solving.
  11. Able to establish and maintain constructive relationships and resolve conflict to meet student needs.
  12. Able to work under limited supervision following standardized practices and/or methods; leading, guiding, and/or coordinating others.
  13. Able to utilize resources from other work units to meet student needs.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
These are examples of skills and experience that the best qualified candidates may have. Not having one or all of them does not disqualify any candidate from consideration.
  1. Experience in a K-12 special education or public employment environment.
  2. Spanish or other language proficiency, including ability to read, write, speak, and understand.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Instructs students in the development of physical skills and abilities (e.g. motor skills, exercises, etc.) to meet the requirements of the State Core Physical Education curriculum.
  2. Prepare teaching materials and related reports, document student progress (e.g. attendance, anecdotal records, etc.) and implement lesson plans.
  3. Provide for the individual needs of students (e.g. assistive devices, supportive technology, assistance accessing facilities, etc.) to ensure access to a quality educational program.
  4. Manage student behavior to provide a safe and optimal learning environment, and report incidents (e.g. fights, suspected child abuse, neglect, suspected substance abuse, etc.) to ensure compliance with administrative, school polices, state and federal law.
  5. Implements students' learning and behavior plans to meet students' social and behavioral interventions, health care plans, and/or ensuring compliance with IEPs.
  6. Monitors individual students in a variety of settings (e.g. classroom, playground activities, etc.) providing a safe and positive learning environment.
  7. Collaborate with school personnel and parents to improve the quality of student outcomes, develop solutions, plan curriculum, convey information on student progress and encouraging parental involvement.
  8. Performs record keeping and clerical functions (e.g. scheduling, copying, data recording, etc.) to support the administrator.
  9. Prepares teaching materials and related reports (e.g. grades, attendance, anecdotal records, etc.) for the purpose of implementing lesson plans and documenting student progress.
  10. Reports incidents (e.g. fights, suspected child abuse, suspected substance abuse, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining the personal safety of students, providing a positive learning environment and adhering to Education Code, administrative and/or school policies.
  11. Participates in various meetings for the purpose of receiving and/or conveying information.
  12. Assess student learning, participation and/or skills for the purpose of providing quality, age-appropriate instruction.
  13. Supervise academic enrichment activities (e.g. class activities, field trips, visits by guests, etc.) guiding students in learning from those enhancements.
  14. Assists other personnel as required and needed (e.g. instructors, site administration, para professionals, etc.) ensuring an efficient and effective work environment.
  15. Perform other duties as assigned.

EMPLOYEE SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: No
WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires 40% sitting, 30% walking, and 30% standing. This job is performed in a generally clean and healthy environment.
