This position will be a part of a cohort of new faculty joining the Bellevue College Community expected to begin in Fall 2024. The Mathematics faculty performs duties and responsibilities under the general direction of the Associate Vice-President of Academic Affairs and is responsible primarily to the Dean of the Science Division. An assistant professor in the Mathematics Department has duties in both teaching and governance.

The candidate should be committed to improving student education both directly (through high-impact and effective instruction) and indirectly (through service to the department, college and community aimed at improving student success at Bellevue College). A successful candidate will be dedicated to teaching mathematics at an open-enrollment institution. Individuals with demonstrated commitment to closing opportunity gaps in STEM fields are particularly encouraged to apply, as are those with experience creating supportive learning and work environments for diverse students and colleagues.

Pay, Benefits & Work Schedule Position Salary Range: $77,250.30/year - $108,344.14/year Annual salary is based on a 176-day contract with a minimum of $77,250.30; beginning salary will be determined by the assessment of the candidate's education and related experience. New hires start no higher than $82,831.36 unless exceptional circumstances prevail. Certain positions may also be eligible for assignment/project-based additional compensation, including a High Demand Stipend up to $8,350 annually, prorated based on the discipline and duration of the assignment.

All additional compensations are subject to change depending on funding and negotiated agreement. We offer comprehensive compensation package with salary and benefits as the main components. In addition to teaching, full-time faculty maintains office hours and participate in department and college activities. This position is represented by the Bellevue College Association of Higher Education (BCAHE) union. About the Department The Science Division provides opportunities for students to explore and pursue degrees in STEM. Our Division has set a goal of reducing opportunity gaps and we are engaging in conversations and initiatives to address these within our pedagogical and organizational practices. The mathematics department offers over 30 different courses at both the precollege and college level.

We also offer classes in a variety of modes, including online, computer-aided, self-paced, and traditional lecture. For more detailed information, please visit the math department webpages. Essential Functions Teaching responsibilities: Teach three 5-credit classes per quarter in the Fall, Winter, and Spring; or an equivalent course load.

Class sizes typically range from 22 to 36 students. Teach in face-to-face settings and/or synchronous and/or asynchronous virtual settings. (Note that a new full-time faculty is expected to deliver in-person classes or a combination of in-person and virtual classes, rather than exclusively teaching in a virtual environment.) Create and revise course materials, including varied assessments of student knowledge.

Design and facilitate learning experiences centered around student needs and interests by using varied instruction methods and resources such as publisher resources or artificial intelligence (AI). Hold at least five weekly office hours and generally assist students in person one-on-one and/or both through electronic media and in-person. Use data, self-reflection and student/colleague feedback to revise your instruction, improve student success and better serve historically underserved, underrepresented, or marginalized student populations (e.g.

students with disabilities, neurodivergent students, Black, indigenous and students of color, first generation college students, LGBTQIA+ students, Veterans, English language learners, etc.). Grade and/or provide useful feedback to students in a way that promotes student understanding and improvement. Assign overall course grades.

Demonstrate a strong commitment to student success through fostering a positive, caring learning environment where diversity and pluralism are valued. Non-teaching responsibilities: Participate in program-level curriculum design, assessment, revisions, implementation and evaluation aimed at 1) improvement of course relevancy and 2) promotion of educational equity in the classroom. Engage in professional development opportunities on-and-off campus to maintain currency in mathematics applications, research and teaching methodology, and to stay up-to-date on campus programs and policies.

Contribute to the department through service such as textbook selection, curriculum design, feedback regarding department policies and procedures, program and course-level effectiveness assessments, mentoring of adjunct faculty, and more. Participate in college governance and decision making by representing faculty and department interests on division-wide and campus-wide committees. Participate in campus-wide efforts to dismantle barriers that can impact historically marginalized student populations.

Provide culturally responsive guidance and advising with an emphasis on the needs of historically marginalized student populations as they navigate courses and college systems. Minimum Qualifications Master's or higher in Mathematics or related discipline from an accredited institution Experience teaching in the first two years of collegiate Mathematics (such as algebra, pre-calculus, calculus, linear algebra or differential equations; Check the class schedule for more courses offered) or relevant skills to do so effectively Effective communication skills (to students and colleagues) in both written and oral form Experience completing tasks independently and as part of a team Experience incorporating educational equity into teaching philosophies and practices to address the needs of students of varied identities and backgrounds Dedication to increasing inclusivity and closing opportunity gaps for historically marginalized students with intentional curriculum and instruction design Preferred Qualifications Some combination of the following qualifications is preferred: Experience or demonstrated commitment to teaching, mentoring or engaging in service in historically marginalized communities, particularly the Black, Latino or indigenous communities Demonstrated knowledge of barriers for historically marginalized students and faculty or experience in addressing disproportionate impact and equity issues within an institution Knowledge/experience working with a variety of teaching modalities and delivery methods, including using a learning management system, simulation, flipped classes, asynchronous/synchronous online, and hybrid courses Background/prior experience that shows understanding of concepts related to student-centered teaching and learning theory, curriculum development, and assessment of learning outcomes Active involvement in community and professional organizations Experience or interest in teaching any of the following: Corequisite courses Computational statistics and probability with use of software such as MATLAB, Python or R, which supports the Data Science/Data Analytics program Discrete mathematics which supports the Computer Science program Scientific Computation Conditions of Employment Bellevue College intends to provide a drug-free, healthy, safe, and secure work and educational environment.
