Lynker is seeking to hire a Mathematical Statistician to join our team. This position will be fully remote.
Requirements of the Mathematical Statistician:
Ph.D. (or equivalent) level knowledge of the statistical theories, principles, and methods, and the ability to define problems, perform background research, develop, and execute a project plan, organize and evaluate results, and prepare reports of findings
Knowledge of scientific principles and concepts for the effective management of living marine resources. Knowledge of biology and ecology of marine species
Preferred Qualifications of the Mathematical Statistician:
Experience with sample design and development (preferably with fishery-dependent data sets)
Experience with various analytical methodologies
Roles and Responsibilities:
Analyze and oversee quality control for fishery-dependent catch and effort information used to inform stock assessments for Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico fish stocks
Collect, manage, evaluate, and report on SEFHIER analyses, and any identified data errors
Design new approaches for data collection surveys & methodologies for compilation & distribution to provide quality information for fisheries management, conservation & development
Use R code to perform statistical analysis, using appropriate statistical methods, in order to produce standard and nonstandard reports, summary statistics, and data visualizations (e.g. figures); revise quality control processes, using ranges and distributions to identify outliers
Respond to internal and public requests for information and analyses
Write SQL queries to pull data from Oracle database for analytical tasks
Investigate/explore data for quality (e.g., anomalies, outliers, repeated, missing, mismatched, or null data)
Guide other technical experts in the construction of inputs for stock assessments and management actions; provide oversight of scientific publications activities
Participate on agency and other working groups providing advice on fisheries dependent data collection issues before the group
Coordinate with federal and state data collection partners to improve fisheries data collection programs
Document all R code and SQL queries for clarity including stepwise notes in the code itself to ensure usability and replicability by other team members
Evaluate new statistical methods and analyses for the collection of fisheries data to inform stock assessments and management decisions
Prepare written materials and analyses in a format approved by the NOAA Project Lead
Attend interdisciplinary team meetings on amendments to fishery management plans
Show up to meetings on time, participate, and ask relevant questions as needed
Review meeting notes for accuracy and provide detailed and accurate information when requested
