The Math Specialist provides professional mathematics tutoring to students in the Student Success Center and Student Support Services programs on the HCC Campus in Highland. This position is part-time and is needed August - May during the academic year on the Highland Campus only.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESinclude the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Collect course syllabi/outlines of math courses on campus.
- Communicate with faculty in regards to student progress, needs, etc.
- Assist student tutors with math questions.
- Track student progress in math courses.
- Work with varying levels of math education to include, but not limited to: Fundamentals of Algebra, Beginning Algebra, Intermediate Algebra, and College Algebra.
- Explain to students how math skills relate to real life situations.
- Utilize web resources and additional materials as needed to address student's learning needs.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Education and/or Experience
Bachelor's Degree in mathematics and one year relevant teaching experience required. Master's degree and four years relevant teaching experience desired. Demonstrated expertise and success in teaching developmental program context desired. Experience in the follow areas desired: Higher education; with students with remedial needs; with non-traditional students; with TRIO programs.
Language Skills
Strong oral and written communication skills required. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret most complex documents. Ability to convey information to students in various way to accommodate various learning styles.
