Position Description
The Materials Engineer II will be the primary technical expert for VT's proprietary composite Fire Core products. They will work with design engineering on product development and materials testing. They will also be responsible for keeping up with 'Best Practices', continually analyzing industry trends/new technology for Quality and Technology improvements through controls and process.
Essential Job Functions:
Serve as the lead and subject matters expert for all projects, processes, and improvements pertaining to fire core products
Support and recommend research and development efforts, along with creating prototype builds
Assure compliance with proper safety procedures including equipment guards and switch protectors, warning notices, and related OSHA and environmental regulations
Support supplier quality improvement actions and ensure effective implementation of engineering and quality objectives
Material evaluation based on Customer, Application, and Engineering specifications
Plan, execute, and follow-up on Kaizen Events
Support/recommend internal and external tests and testing methods
Create documentation related to materials and product development, and maintain in an organized library
Conduct materials research
Develop new methods of testing, training and quality control for development of products with new materials
Develop vendor relationships related to Materials Engineering
Improve Processes and Eliminate Waste in Key Constraint Areas
Create and Maintain Standard Work Instructions, SOPs, 5S Checklists, and Standard Work Audits
Drive Measurable Continuous Improvement
Determine potential savings and calculate ROI for projects.
Teach Lean Manufacturing concepts. Partner in the transformation of the manufacturing environment
Understand and apply Ergonomics requirements to eliminate work hazards and improve work safety
Mentor, train, develop and evaluate team members as required.
Provide input to systems that track cost and progress
Help develop and drive metrics for Production Teams
Design processes that satisfy Federal, State, and Local safety laws
Develop and support methods to collect suggestion and feedback for continuous improvement from all areas of the company

Position Requirements
Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or related field required
3-5+ years of related experience in Materials Engineering, preferably in a manufacturing environment
Familiar with general fabrication and testing equipment
Possess excellent communication skills in verbal and written forms, comfortable in front of groups
Knowledge of product design and manufacturing processes
Familiar with engineering software (SolidWorks, AuotCAD, etc.)
Problem solving knowhow and willingness to mentor others in solving problems

Physical Requirements
Tolerance for sitting long periods of time. Possess finger dexterity to write, type, and use a calculator. Maintain adequate vision to view small print and computer terminal. Ability to speak and hear, walk throughout facilities with occasional moderate lifting (50 pounds), stooping, kneeling, crouching, and reaching with hands and arms required. Ability to travel between multiple facilities as required to perform core job duties. Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Ability to climb up or down ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles, and the like, using feet and legs and/or hands and arms. Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling when walking, standing, or crouching on narrow, slippery, or erratically moving surfaces. Ability to bend body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist.
