Monthly Salary Range
Material/Process Inspector I: (B18) $3,543.42 - $5,639.25
Material/Process Inspector II: (B19) $3,770.33 - $6,034.00

This position is for a Material/Process Inspector I or II. The Texas Department of Transportation reserves the sole right in determining the level of position based on the applicant's work experience, education, skill level, and all other appropriate factors, and based on business needs.

Position Description


Material/Process Inspector I:

Performs advanced material tests and manufacturing process inspections in laboratories, plants and/or at points of supply. Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to meet set objectives. Issues are rarely referred to the supervisor but are handled at the occurrence.

Material/Process Inspector II:

Performs advanced material tests and manufacturing process inspections in laboratories, plants and/or at points of supply. Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to meet set objectives. Issues are rarely referred to the supervisor but are handled at the occurrence.

Essential Duties:

Material/Process Inspector I:

  • Drives/travels to laboratories, manufacturing plants, points of supply, warehouses and project sites to monitor status of programs, meet with supervisors and managers to resolve problems and perform unannounced inspection of operations.
  • Observes tests and inspections and reviews reports from other inspectors; performs quality assurance for tests and inspections
  • Plans, coordinates, assigns, monitors and reviews the work of technical employees.
  • Prepares and maintains inspection or test reports and issues material reports.
  • Reviews plans and material specifications for changes in material requirements.
  • Trains and assists other inspectors and private sector employees and provides project specification information.
  • Maintains a diary of inspection or test details.
  • Maintains and calibrates equipment.
  • May serve as a lead worker and the related tasks.
  • Performs tests and inspection duties.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Material/Process Inspector II:

  • Maintains and calibrates equipment.

Minimum Qualifications:

Material/Process Inspector I:

Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general education.

Experience: 6 years laboratory work, material inspection or other engineering related activities. (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent). Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications

Material/Process Inspector II:

Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general education.

Experience: 7 years laboratory work, material inspection or other engineering related activities. (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent). Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications

Material/Process Inspector I and II:

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
  • Must have or obtain certification in one of the listed HMA certifications within 12 months of date of hire:
    • Hot Mix Asphalt Spec-IA Cert
    • Hot Mix Asphalt Spec-IB Cert
    • Hot Mix Asphalt Spec-II Cert

  • Aggregates and asphalt
  • Materials used in highway/bridge construction and maintenance
  • Laboratory testing procedures and methodologies
  • Applicable industry safety standards, guidelines and specification codes
  • Nuclear gauge operation
  • Conducting laboratory tests
  • Calibrating equipment
  • Leading, assigning, reviewing, and monitoring the work of others
  • Using computers and applicable programs, applications, and systems
  • Maintaining a safe working relationship
  • Exercises logic and reasoning to define problems, establish facts and draw valid conclusions; makes decisions that support business objectives and goals

Material/Process Inspector II:

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

Material/Process Inspector I and II:

  • Subject to outside environmental conditions; no effective weather protection
  • Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and/or above 100 degrees for more than one hour
  • Subject to noise
  • Subject to hazards-moving vehicles/mechanical parts, high places/heat, or chemicals
  • Required to wear protective gear-respirator, hard hat, or other device
  • Sedentary work: Lift up to 10 lbs at a time and occasionally carry files/small tools
  • Balancing-walking, standing, crouching on various surfaces without falling
  • Standing-prolonged periods of time
