Job Description
Montgomery College, Department of Mathematics,Statistics, and Data Science, Rockville campus has an immediate need for a full-time Master Tutor. This is a grade 27, exempt non-bargaining position. The normal work schedule is in-person Monday through Friday, 8:30am - 5:00pm.

Under supervision and/or direction, the Master Tutor provides tutoring and other types of direct support for students and faculty. They provide subject matter expertise in learning assistance and develop instructional materials in consultation and coordination with faculty, staff, and/or the department chair. This position involves providing targeted academic support to students enrolled in developmental math, technical support in the implementation and evaluation of developmental courses, and support to students in different stages of the math placement process.
Duties include but are not limited to:
  • Provide assistance to students, both individually and in groups, requiring remediation in developmental math concepts.This can involve addressing questions, clarifying doubts, and offering personalized guidance to enhance understanding.
  • Develop and/or compile supplementary learning materials including study materials, practice exams, and online tools.
  • Organize and facilitate workshops on study skills, time management, and effective problem-solving strategies to help students develop the academic skills necessary for success in their math courses.
  • Administer diagnostic assessments to identify specific areas of weakness for individual students. Use the results to tailor support and interventions to address those weaknesses.
  • Work closely with instructors of developmental math content to align support services with the curriculum.
  • Collaborate with instructors on fostering efficient student engagement and retention, identifying common challenges students face and implementing strategies to address them effectively.
  • Collaborate on and implement strategies to create an inclusive and welcoming environment for students of varying backgrounds and abilities.
  • Monitor assessment and computerized testing.
  • Assess students' progress throughout tutoring sessions. Provide feedback to the course instructor on student progress, issues, and concerns.
  • Provide subject matter expertise in learning assistance and best practices in developmental math education.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of developmental math concepts and curriculum.
  • Mastery of foundational mathematical principles to provide accurate and comprehensive support.
  • Skilled in active listening methods with the ability to identify and address students' challenges and concerns.
  • Skilled in selecting and using training and instruction methods and procedures appropriate to the situation.
  • Skilled in using computers and technology relevant to assisting and supporting students in a computer classroom or to preparing reports or other written materials.
  • Skilled in problem solving.
  • Ability to effectively communicate, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to adapt instructional support strategies to meet the diverse learning needs of developmental math students.
  • Ability to work with computer hardware and software and assess and perform minor troubleshooting.
  • Ability to work with students at various skill levels and pace.
  • Ability to conduct basic research involving outcomes assessment.

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Mathematics or math education with at least 25 credit hours in mathematics including multivariable calculus and statistics.
  • Five years of experience tutoring/teaching in mathematics.
  • The equivalent combination of education, training, certification and/or experience that provides the required knowledge and expertise to perform the essential functions of the job may be considered.
  • Eligible applicants must currently be authorized to work in the United States and not require employer visa sponsorship.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in Mathematics or Math education.

Hiring Range $63,375 to $82,376 annually. Initial salary placement is based on candidate experience and internal equity.
