Job description

SUMMARY:The primary purpose of this position is to repair and maintain the housing facilities’ water, sewer, and gas lines. The incumbent will also install faucets, hot water heaters, and plumbing fixtures to ensure that all plumbing codes are satisfied. Must have Master Plumber License.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The position duties and responsibilities listed below describe the general nature and scope of work. Other responsibilities, duties and skills may be required and assigned, as needed.

Job Tasks Descriptions:

1. Repairs and unclogs sewers, building drains, storm drains, faucets and plumbing fixtures in the housing units included: toilets, sinks, and bathtubs using various tools; ensures clog or repair is handled correctly and waste or used pipe is disposed of properly.

2. Installs new plumbing fixtures in apartments; decides when new fixtures are needed and ensures that they work with the designed layout.

3. Orders replacement or repair supplies to be prepared for routine and unusual plumbing repairs.

4. Installs and repairs water heaters for apartments.

5. Repairs and installs water pipes that have been damaged; tests backflow device to ensure it is working correctly.

6. Perform preventative maintenance inspections and repairs in district facilities including, but not limited to, domestic water systems and related devices and sanitary waste drainage.

7. Respond to emergency plumbing calls such as clogged drains, broken water lines, frozen pipes, gas odors and possible gas leaks. Evaluate situation and take proper corrective action.

8. Repair or replace water lines, domestic recirculation lines, and sewer lines.

9. Provide labor and material estimates related to plumbing for small remodel projects. Coordinate inspections for contractor performed work in renovations and new construction projects.

10. Recommend repair needs to potentially eliminate ongoing and future repairs.

11. May assist other trades with piping and repair issues.

12. Winterize facilities.

13. Perform other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND RELATED WORK EXPERIENCE:

1. High School diploma required along with two (2) years or more as an unlimited licensed journeyperson or equivalent experience and training.

2. Eight or more years of experience in related trade. Experience as maintenance and repair technician in public sector is preferred.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS or CERTIFICATIONS:

1. Criminal background check required for hire.

2. Valid Connecticut driver’s license with acceptable Motor Vehicle Record required.

3. Valid Connecticut P-1Unlimited Plumber License preferred or P-2.

4. Backflow Prevention Certification preferred at hire, required within 3 months of entering position.

5. Asbestos Training

TECHNICAL SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE & ABILITIES:

1. Ability to perform math computations needed in trade.

2. English language skills. Must be able to exchange information in person, in writing, and via telephone.

3. Personal computer and keyboarding skills.

4. Ability to promote and follow policies and building and department procedures.

5. Ability to communicate, interact and work effectively and cooperatively with people from diverse ethnic and educational backgrounds.

6. Ability to recognize the importance of safety in the workplace, follow safety rules, practice safe work habits, utilize appropriate safety equipment, and report unsafe conditions to the appropriate administrator.

7. Position generally works on Authority properties, which may cause the employee to experience a range in temperatures and other weather conditions.

MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT OPERATING KNOWLEDGE:

1. Thorough knowledge of plumbing codes and regulations. Must be able to read and apply blueprints / schematics and specifications.

2. Must demonstrate proficiency in area of certification prior to advancement to this level.

3. Operating knowledge of and experience with personal computers and peripherals.

4. Operating knowledge of general plumbing repair and maintenance equipment and efficient use of repair parts and tools required for hire.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $71,389.00 - $71,389.50 per year
