Job Description
POSITION TITLE: Master Model Maker
PURPOSE OF POSITION:
The Master Model Maker creates complex three-dimensional models, and mechanisms from verbal instructions or drawings. These models are used for approval meetings, toy fairs, commercial shoots, and engineering development. He or she must support designers, engineers, and a wide variety of requestors. At this level the Master Model Maker must also provide advanced design and construction advice based on production feasibility, and aesthetic approval.
1. Machining of complex parts.
2. Ideation, design, and construction of complex mechanisms.
3. Model finishing including custom color paint mixing and application.
4. Rubber mold making and casting techniques, with full knowledge of all materials.
5. Excellent customer service to all designers, engineers, and various requestors.
SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Master Model Maker's responsibilities include, managing complete projects either alone or assisted by lower level Model Makers. These projects are tailored to be preliminary design, or engineering / development. Projects are required to be completed in the time frame that has been specified on a Model Shop work order, or verbal agreement with the requestor, concurrent with the Master Model Maker's management. The Master Model Maker is also expected to provide critical suggestions in the design, function, or aesthetic composition of a project when required. These duties should be carried out with the utmost professionalism and courtesy to their management, requestors, and co-workers alike. The expectation for this level of Model Maker position is that it requires little or no supervision. This is a result of the Master Model Maker becoming a more independent thinker, and problem solver. The Master Model Maker should be considered an integral part of the design and development process.
COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:
Successful completion of Mattel's Machine Safety Test
Completion of four-year apprenticeship program or equivalent work experience that includes all of the above Key Results.
Advanced knowledge of all model making methods and practices
Ability to work from both verbal and rough sketches or written instructions to create complex models and mechanisms.
Skillfully and accurately interface with peers, design and development customers, and management to competently prioritize multiple projects when required.
EDUCATION REQUIRED: High school graduate. Four year apprenticeship program or equivalent. Formal college level machining courses or equivalent work experience. Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES REQUIRED: The Master Model Maker must be dependable, consistent, and trustworthy. He or she must always strive to maintain their professionalism under all circumstances, and deliver the highest level of quality, workmanship and customer service possible. In addition, the Master Model Maker should also be willing and able to mentor lower level Model Makers. Their attitude should always remain positive in regards to providing the best customer service possible.
