Master Machinist
FLSA Class: Non-Exempt/Hourly
Department: Manufacturing
Type: Full-Time
Reports To: Group Manager - Custom Fab

Schedule: Monday - Thursday, 6:00 AM - 4:30 PM
Starting Pay Rate: $25.50 per hour

Summary/Objective
The Master Machinist operates all types of manufacturing machines to fabricate parts to a high precision or tolerance. The machinist loads parts in the machine, cycles machine and detects malfunctions in machine operations, such as worn or damaged cutting tools. The position runs prototype, single part and production lots, communicates with teammates regarding runs, and maintains a safe, organized and clean work environment.
Essential Functions
  • Develop CNC programs for part and component manufacturing.
  • Program control instructions and dimensions into machine control units to start operation.
  • Calculate machine speed and feed ratios, and the size and positon of cuts.
  • Measure and perform inspection on parts to verify accurate CNC programs.
  • Troubleshoot CNC programs, machine malfunctions and error messages.
  • Communicate with appropriate persons immediately upon discovery of potential problems and work to solve problems promptly and logically.
  • Plans machining by studying work orders, blueprints, engineering plans, materials, specifications, orthographic drawings, reference planes, locations of surfaces, and machining parameters; interpreting geometric dimensions and tolerances (GD&T).
  • Programs mills and lathes by entering instructions, including zero and reference points; setting tool registers, offsets, compensation, and conditional switches; calculating requirements, including basic math, geometry, and trigonometry; proving part programs.
  • Sets-up mills and lathes by installing and adjusting three- and four-jaw chucks, tools, attachments, collets, bushings, cams, gears, stops, and stock pushers; indicating vices.
  • Verifies settings by measuring positions, first-run part, and sample work pieces; adhering to international standards.
  • Maintains specifications by observing drilling, grooving, and cutting, including turning, facing, knurling and threading operations; taking measurements; detecting malfunctions; troubleshooting processes; adjusting and reprogramming controls; sharpening and replacing worn tools; adhering to quality assurance procedures and processes
  • Proficient in operating manual mill and lathes
Qualifications
  • Must be authorized to work in the U.S. without sponsorship.
Educations and Experience
  • High School Diploma, GED and/or Technical School Graduate with concentration CNC Mill and Lathe operations or industry recognized certification.
  • Minimum 8 years of experience.
  • Prefer operating 5 axis CNC, lathe and mill, machining stainless steel.
  • CAM system experience required. FeatureCAM preferred.
Skills and Competencies
  • Able to read blueprints.
  • Proficient in use of micrometer, indicators, and calipers.
  • The ability to set up and run a limited number of shop machines
  • Must understand shop math/algebra/trigonometry
  • Able to read, write, and have a working knowledge of English

Work Environment
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts and vibration. The noise level in the work environment can be loud.
