Job Description Summary
Perform semi-skilled and skilled electrical installations, repairs electrical equipment and perform maintenance on electrical system. Duties are performed at various levels within the defined title.
Maintenance & Operations positions are responsible for the daily operations, upkeep, and general and skilled repairs, replacement of parts and structural components, and other activities needed to preserve an asset so that it continues to provide acceptable services and achieves its expected life. Scope of responsibility varies within this category and includes the following areas: general maintenance; plumbing; carpentry, electrical and painting.
Job Description
Under general supervision from supervisor, perform skilled electrical installation and repair work at Master Electrician skill level. Serve as team leader and train others in proper work methods and procedures.
Perform all essential functions of an Electrician Apprentice. Install, maintain and repair all electrical systems.
Observe functioning of installed equipment or systems to detect need for adjustments, relocation, replacement or repair.
Maintain higher voltage services by activities like racking out breakers at substations, opening oil switches and replacing fuses on medium voltage lines.
Plan new or modified installations to minimize waste of materials, to provide access for future maintenance and avoid unsightly, hazardous and unreliable wiring consistent with specifications and local electrical codes.
Test fire alarm systems.
Complete work, time and material usage reports. Perform other duties as assigned by Superintendent/Supervisor.
Additional Position Information:
Required Qualifications: Requires high school diploma or GED, and successful completion of a State Certified Apprenticeship Training Program for Electricians.
Requires a minimum of 6 years performing work of an electrician. Ability to operate and use standard powered and nonpowered electrical equipment required. Ability to perform mathematics associated with trade applications (fractions, ratios, percentages) required. Ability to read, write and accurately follow oral, written and graphic instructions required.

Compensation: This is a Union position with a salary Grade of 9. Salary determination is subject to the CWA Collective Bargaining Agreement. Hiring rate for this position is $21.54 hour. The University of Akron offers a competitive total compensation package comprised of a competitive salary and comprehensive benefits for eligible employees including medical, dental, vision, short and long-term disability, life insurance, and paid leave of absences including time off for illness, vacation, and maternity or paternity leave. In addition, eligible employees and their dependents are provided tuition remission.
