Master Control/Traffic Technician

The Master Control/Traffic Technician supports Rocky Mountain PBS (RMPBS) with operational & technical support of Joint Master Control provider Public Media Management (PMM). Assists with Traffic log generation with RMPBS Programming and Myers Traffic personnel. Performs all program and playlist checks to ensure correct air of programs on RMPBS. Assists with systems diagnosis, maintenance, repair of all systems related to the TV on-air signal for RMPBS. Assists with integration of programs from third-party external content producers.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Daily Master Control pre-air and on-air checks and operations. Air signal monitoring is shared with Joint Master Control provider. Utilizes automation software and associated broadcast servers, equipment, and follows operational procedures.
  • Troubleshoots playlist discrepancies and communicates with PMM Network Operations Staff.
  • Integrates closely with Traffic personnel, Myers ProTrack traffic software and associated RMPBS traffic workflow procedures and their interrelationships to broadcast automation playlists.
  • Utilizes knowledge of PBS and Myers traffic system processes and procedures to manage ongoing PBS, local and pledge program changes.
  • Assures that program logs are appended, and automation playlists are correct. Troubleshoots error messages to avoid on-air interruptions.
  • Monitors live coverage and join in progress events and manually manipulates automation playlists and placement/removal of graphics supers as needed.
  • Oversees and assists with local Traffic/Programming content quality control (QC) and content file ingests to on-air playout server. Ensures that local RMPBS content media files are available on-air systems within deadlines. Manages RMPBS local and external producer content for quality and distribution platforms, including posting links, photos, and descriptions to Media Manager, as needed.
  • Works with Creative Services workflow on promotion, interstitial spot QC and ingest, as needed
  • Assists with and documents technical quality control (QC) for RMPBS local and external producer content, including file technical specifications, video levels, audio levels and closed captioning content. Applies limited corrections to files as needed and provides timely communication of issues and status of QC results to coworkers.
  • Works with external program producers to communicate technical standards and enforce submission deadlines for air.
  • Video editing and manipulation of edit timelines with Adobe Premier or other editing software.
  • Works with vendor technical support and Technology department members to update, maintain and repair all systems in the Master Control and Technology core environments.
  • Remotely monitors and controls Master Control, transport stream and transmitter systems as required.
  • Demonstrated capability to troubleshoot and assist repair of state-of-the-art production and engineering equipment including Master Control, primary transmission chain, and equipment room infrastructure including primary router, conversion, distribution and encoding equipment.
  • Work with Joint Master Control provider and Technology staff for resolution of on-air issues.
  • Performs software and firmware updates on broadcast operations systems as required and maintains comprehensive database of updates performed.
  • Performs weekly checks and sign offs of RMPBS transmitter and EAS logs for all stations in the network.
  • May assist the IT department for LAN, WAN, and desktop support.
  • Utilizes various technical measurement tools such as multi-meters, oscilloscopes, vector scopes, waveform monitors, signal generators, spectrum analyzers, etc. used for diagnosis of electrical, audio, video, and RF systems to analyze and verify technically correct video/audio levels and identify anomalous video and audio conditions.
  • Performs discrepancy report follow-up, submits discrepancy report summaries, and tracks and reports down time of regional transmissions.
  • Will be required to work flexible hours in a 24/7 environment and share in on-call duties.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications of Position

  • Bachelor's degree in a related Broadcasting/TV Operations field,
  • A mix of demonstrated skills, abilities and knowledge may be considered in place of educational requirements.
  • Minimum five years broadcast TV Operations experience.
  • Knowledge of video file export codecs and video file transport methods and procedures.
  • Operational knowledge of Crispin automation systems or other automation software and associated broadcast servers, equipment, and operational procedures.
  • Working knowledge of video and audio compression technology (MPEG, Dolby AC-3, etc.)
  • Solid understanding of television engineering as it applies to multi-channel Master Control operations.
  • Familiarity with broadcast video and audio technical standards. Ability to utilize various technical measurement tools such as multi-meters, oscilloscopes, vector scopes, waveform monitors, signal generators, spectrum analyzers, etc. used for diagnosis of electrical, audio, video, and RF systems.
  • Working knowledge of IP network infrastructure, computer systems and equipment.
  • Experience in developing and writing Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Basic working knowledge Microsoft Office 365 and Adobe suite applications and programs.
  • Demonstrated ability to draft and maintain files and records of operational activities.

Additional Qualifications of Position


  • Experience with Traffic log generation process is a plus.
  • Experience with and understanding of Telestream Vantage templates and workflow, and Telestream Vidchecker QC system functions and configuration is a plus.
  • Strong positive organizational, teamwork and interpersonal skills. Must be able to work both independently and as a collaborative and productive team member.
  • Must possess exceptional time management, decision making and organizational skills.
  • Must be detail-oriented with an ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Must have a demonstrated ability to work under pressure, meet deadlines, and work within established budgets.

This position works primarily in Master Control, office, and Media Center equipment room areas This position must be able to work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends.
