We have an exciting opportunity for a Mars Geochemist to join the team with Texas State.

Responsibilities:

  • Work on Jacobs JETSII contract in support of the Astromaterials Research & Exploration Science Directorate (ARES) at NASA's Johnson Space
  • Center (JSC) in the field of astromaterials and planetary science, while providing support for NASA missions
  • Participate in collaborative research with a diverse team of internal and external scientists
  • Perform sample preparation for chemical and mineralogical analysis
  • Assist with the organization of laboratory safety documents, maintenance of chemical inventory, and procurement of laboratory supplies
  • Support current projects and provide service to local and external users
  • Develop new lines of research and apply for competed research grants
  • Summarize, communicate, and publish quantitative scientific results
  • Actively participate in safety programs
  • Perform other tasks as assigned

Requisition Qualifications:

This position has been posted at multiple levels. Depending on the candidate's experience, requirements, and business needs, we reserve the right to consider candidates at any level for which this position has been advertised.

  • BS degree is typically required
  • Experience processing geologic samples for compositional analysis
  • Experience analyzing the geochemical and mineralogical composition of geologic samples (e.g., using XRD, Raman, XRF, solution chemistry)
  • Experience analyzing the structure and composition of phyllosilicates and X-ray amorphous materials (e.g., using XRD, TEM, Raman)
  • Must have knowledge of petrology and mineralogy
  • Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills, as well as excellent interpersonal skills
    Track record of publication of scientific results in the peer-reviewed literature and presentation of research results at scientific meetings and conferences

 

Requisition Preferences: 

  • Degree in geology, chemistry, or related discipline from an accredited college or university
  • Demonstrated ability to secure funding through competitive research proposals is a plus
  • Experience interpreting compositional data from Mars

Essential Functions

Work Environment

Generally, an office environment, but can involve inside or outside work depending on task.

Physical Requirements

Work may involve sitting or standing for extended periods (90% of time). May require lifting and carrying up to 25 lbs. (5% of time).

Equipment and Machines

Standard office equipment (PC, telephone, printer, etc.).

Attendance

Regular attendance in accordance with established work schedule is critical. Ability to work outside normal schedule and adjust schedule to meet peak periods and surge requirements.
