MARINE PATROL OFFICER TRAINEE

$23.46- $31.09 per hour


MPOT Test Dates: Saturday March 23, 2024 and Saturday April 13, 2024

The State of New Hampshire, Department of Safety, Division of State Police - Marine Patrol is recruiting non-exempt, part-time seasonal vacancies for Marine Patrol Officer Trainees.

SCOPE OF WORK: Responsible for the enforcement of criminal, boating, and other laws to ensure public protection and safety, maintains law and order, detect and prevent crimes, apprehend suspects and prosecute violators, and provides security for the State’s seacoast and ports under the direction of supervisory Marine Patrol Officers.

ACCOUNTABILITIES:

Performs law enforcement duties under the supervision of a designated superior by patrolling inland/coastal waters and enforcing boating laws and rules.

Inspects private and commercial boats for compliance with safety regulations.

Checks spar buoys and flashing light beacons for proper placement and operation.

Investigates boating accidents, complaints, and calls for service from the public.

Arrests suspects forcibly if necessary, using handcuffs and other restraints; subdues resisting suspects using maneuvers, approved weapons, and hands and feet in self-defense.

Operates law enforcement patrol boats during both day and night in emergency situations involving high speeds, in congested traffic and unsafe water conditions caused by factors such as fog, rain, wind, heavy surf, extreme cold, (icing conditions), current, ice and snow.

Drafts investigative and other reports including sketches, citations, affidavits, complaints and warrants using appropriate grammar, symbols, and mathematical computations.

Responds to water emergencies on inland/coastal waters.

Prosecutes and testifies as a witness in District Court.

Assists in traffic control at major waterborne events.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: High school diploma or high school equivalency credential.

Experience: No experience required. However, experience in operating power or sail boats is desirable.

License/Certification: Current Red Cross Multi-Media First Aid Certificate or its equivalent as determined by the Chief or Deputy Chief, Marine Patrol Section. Within six months, applicant must successfully complete requirements to be certified as a part-time police officer by the New Hampshire Police Standards and Training Council unless already certified and certification is still in effect. Must possess a valid New Hampshire Boating Education Certificate and a valid motor vehicle driver’s license.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

1. Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age on date of appointment.

2. Must be in good physical condition; applicants selected for employment must submit a physicians’ statement of health prior to employment.

3. Must be able to pass a 50-yard free style swim test or have a current certificate of swimming ability containing this requirement.

4. Must be willing to accept employment in assigned geographic location.

5. Must pass written, navigation performance, and physical aptitude and agility examinations administered by the Division of Safety Services.

6. Must successfully complete specified in-house Marine Patrol training.

7. The selected candidate will undergo a background investigation including motor vehicle and fingerprint-based criminal record checks to validate suitability for exposure to confidential information and financial information. Annual motor vehicle record checks will be required.

8. Will be required to work a flexible schedule including early morning, evening and/or weekend hours during the boating season under varying environmental conditions.
