Job Title: Marine Mammal Stranding Coordinator

Location: Silver Spring, MD

Clearance Required: Public Trust Eligible
Description
IBSS is seeking a Marine Mammal Stranding Coordinator to provide assistance to support the Marine Mammal Health and Stranding Response Program (MMHSRP) to implement policies, procedures, protocols and regulations to conserve and protect Marine Mammals, and investigate marine wildlife health issues.


Responsibilities:

  • Assist Federal staff with technical writing for multiple MMHSRP projects including:
  • MMHSRP website revisions and updates
  • Periodic Stranding, Entanglement, Prescott Grant Program, Unusual Mortality Event and other technical reports and technical memorandum
  • Revising and editing Best Practice documents from the Programmatic Environmental Impact Statement as needed
  • Revising and editing Factsheets for distribution to the Stranding Network, on website, or to regional coordinators
  • Other policy, procedural or guidance documents as requested
  • Work with Federal staff and the Protected Resources web team to assist with content development and support for MMHSRP websites.
  • Assist Federal staff with planning, standards, and definition development, beta testing, and implementation of the National Marine Mammal Health Monitoring and Analysis Platform (MMHMAP), MMHMAP GulfMAP pilot project, and other health database projects as requested.
  • Assist Federal staff with planning and implementation of the National Stranding Meeting including:
  • Convening subcommittee organizational calls, including developing agendas and draft documents
  • Developing technical program book and other handouts (print or electronic) for meeting attendees
  • Coordinating with NCTC (meeting location) staff
  • Determining where/how to obtain needed supplied and equipment
  • Staffing the meeting
  • Manage existing archival tissue and fluid specimens at the National Museum of Natural History (NMNH) and other contracted archival facilities (e.g. National Institutes of Standards and Technology, EPL, etc.) and manage archival specimen database; assist stranding network with tissue sample archiving.
  • Package and ship any remaining tissue and fluid specimens stored at the NMNH on an as needed basis
  • Package and ship any tissue and fluid specimens for shipment to other contracted archival facilities
  • Maintain the specimen tracking database for the MMHSRP pathology records and assist with its migration to the MMHMAP and
  • Assist Marine Mammal Stranding network members with tissue sample archiving including onsite collation and inventory, processing and shipment to archival facilities
  • Assist Federal staff with National Database quality assurance and quality control, Group Event data, as well as other National Database projects as requested.
  • Assist Federal staff with data entry for Unusual Mortality Events (UMEs), emergency responses or other MMHSRP projects as requested.
  • Assist Federal staff with planning and staffing for several workshops on various Marine Mammal Stranding, entanglement and/or health topics.
  • Assist Federal staff, State partners, and the Marine Mammal Stranding Network with health assessments and emergency responses including but not limited to health assessment capture and release projects and stranding response and necropsies for pinniped and cetacean populations impacted by UMEs, oil spills or in areas of special concern (e.g. high pollution loads, climate change, etc.)
  • Support MMHSRP projects in policy, training, workshops, technical writing, and communication as requested.
  • Present information about MMHSRP as needed to the stranding Network, NOAA, and other Federal or State officials, Congressional staff, the public, and at scientific conferences or other public meetings and workshops.
  • Work closely with Federal staff and the UME, emergency response and national stranding programs. Participate in monthly calls with NOAA MMHSRP POC and quarterly meetings or conference calls with MMHSRP health team.


Required Skills /Education/ Certifications & Qualifications:

  • BS in Marine Science or related field
