SUMMARY

New York Edge is seeking passionate and enthusiastic people to fill the role of Marching Band Specialist. In this role, you will organize, lead, and promote interest in a wide variety of instruments in the percussion, brass and wind families , as well as demonstrate the ability to teach youth through developmentally appropriate lessons. The Marching Band Specialist will demonstrate creativity, imagination, interpersonal skills, and manual dexterity specialists for sequential lesson planning based on the New York Edge curriculum, classroom preparation for teaching and holding students to established standards, and adapting the New York State Arts Learning Standards in order to create an engaging and rewarding activity that encourages participation in New York Edge programs.

Job Type:

Part-time (Monday-Friday, some evenings and weekends as needed)

Pay Rate

$20-$25 per hour

Essential Job Functions:

● Establish and enforce rules for behavior and procedures for maintaining order among the students for whom they are responsible.

● Organize, lead, and promote interest in daily music activities such as worksheets, warm-up, and practice of playing, counting and rhythm, style and tempo as well as activities that lead to full performance pieces.

● Organize performance groups, and direct their rehearsals.

● Establish clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects, and communicate those objectives to students.

● Ascertain and interpret group interests, evaluate equipment and facilities, and adapt activities to meet the student’s need.

● Prepare materials and classrooms for class activities.

● Explain principles, techniques, and safety procedures to participants in the activities, and demonstrate proper handling of instruments.

● Evaluate activity to determine if they are producing desired results. ● Adapt teaching methods and instructional materials to meet students' varying needs and interests.

● Progressive development of student skills leading to a final project ● Promotes positive character development in all youth

Required skills:

  • Must be knowledgeable and skilled in music terminology and culture, have prior experience successfully teaching and instructing youth in this expertise.

  • Must be able to teach various band instruments in the brass, wind and percussion families.

  • Must possess strong instructional skills and patience.

  • Must have prior performance experience and stage/theater etiquette and understanding.

  • Must have knowledge and prior experience putting a performance together.

  • Must have knowledge in various musical eras, music history and resources to develop a well-rounded and cohesive study in music discussions throughout the school year.

  • Must be responsible, reliable and punctual!

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills required.

  • Strong background in Marching Band, percussion performance. Drum corps or university marching band experience preferred

  • Experience in the various sub groups of the percussion section (e.g. snare, bass, tenors, mallets, etc)

  • Previous experience with instructing/teaching percussion

  • Ability to tune/replace drum heads and do minor repairs on drumline equipment (preferred)

    Qualifications:

    ● High school diploma required; some college referred.

    ● Minimum of two years of work-related skill, knowledge, or experience is required.

    ● Must have passion for New York Edge mission and demonstrated interest in the field of education and youth development.

    ● Able to work afternoons and/or evenings.

    ● Certifications and credentials in respective music study highly preferred.

    The Marching Band Specialist will be required to report to the school building and interact with staff, students, parents and school administration.

    A t time of offer and acceptance, the job requires safety and security clearances through the Department of Education and Department of Health.
