Job description

Note: APA operates on a 37.5-hour work week with one hour lunch breaks each day. APA sets salaries based on several considerations, including years of relevant experience, level of education, and previous staff and/or governance experience at APA.
DESCRIPTION:
The American Psychological Association is looking for a visionary and innovative Managing Editor to guide production of content across all our editorial channels.
The editor's primary focus will be creating content products for key audiences showing how the use of psychological science can improve lives. The editor will lead projects highlighting how changing human behavior can lead to healthier workplaces and schools, racial and social justice, a better physical environment and political climate, and more.
The ideal candidate has the skills to tackle a wide variety of projects on psychology topics, news, public education initiatives, newsletters, and summaries that synthesize complex issues and psychological research into easily understood language for multiple audiences, including psychological researchers, parents, teachers, health care professionals, employers and c-suite executives.
This job requires a deep passion for storytelling. It demands creative thinking, close partnership with peers, and a comprehensive understanding of the association's work and priorities. You must be able to remain collegial while working under deadline pressure and having to re-prioritize work based on news of the day.
The editor reports to the APA Editor-in-Chief and oversees the contract management and deliverables of external freelance writers, photographers, editors, and designers.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
Excellent leadership, communication, and people skills, along with a strong sense of mission and teamwork.
  • BSc/BA in journalism or relevant field, as well as knowledge of science writing and psychology.
  • Minimum of 10-12 years of progressive professional experience; with experience in supervision of a pool of external contractors strongly preferred.

  • Strong knowledge of science in all its forms, especially psychology.
  • Significant management experience, including editing and producing both print and digital products.

  • Experience navigating change with an entrepreneurial approach.

  • High emotional intelligence and excellent leadership, communication, diplomacy, and project management skills.
  • Exceptional editorial judgment and attention to detail, a keen sense of storytelling, a proven mastery of grammar, spelling, and both AP and APA style.
  • Obsessively focused on accuracy, details, copyediting, and top-notch writing
  • Comfortable with 100% remote work, including leading remote teams.

COMPUTER SKILLS:
You will be leading meetings where we discuss both short- and long-term editorial plans, so you will need to be comfortable using technology to manage teams who will be working remotely. A deep knowledge of Microsoft Office suite or the ability to learn.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • The Managing Editor will seamlessly shepherd content from conception, including assisting with brainstorming/researching ideas, assigning projects, continuously tracking their status and crafting final products, including in print and online. This includes collaborating with senior editors, writers, designers, photographers, and others.

  • Lead others in developing and curating high-quality content that tells psychology's story. Find ways to optimize content by creating and/or revising news and features to engage and meet the different needs of APA's many audiences, which include various types of psychologists, including bench scientists and researchers, as well as the public, policymakers, teachers, parents, and more.

  • The Managing Editor is responsible for building out a) public facing content to position APA as a thought leader in major sectors-workplace, business, education, and health care and b) specialized content for psychologists.
  • Map out and execute a content strategy to elevate psychology as a trusted scientific source on major societal issues-health equity, racism, EDI, dis/misinformation, and mental health.

  • Incorporate data and feedback to continuously improve our products. This includes co-managing a master calendar of communication to ensure strategic objectives are met, noise is minimized, and resonance around key ideas is created.
  • Serve as an ambassador and educate stakeholders, both internally and externally, about our content and mission.

Other Duties as Assigned:
  • Write
  • Develop special projects.
