Co-founded in 2005 by activists and filmmakers Robert Redford and James Redford, The Redford Center is a nonprofit organization that advances environmental solutions through the power of stories that move. We believe that environmental films are some of the most effective tools we have to shift culture, build empathy, support frontline communities, and move people into action. As one of the only US-based nonprofits solely dedicated to environmental impact filmmaking, The Redford Center develops and invests in projects that foster action and strengthen the reach of the grassroots efforts driving the environmental movement.

Position Description

The Redford Center is in an exciting moment of growth, seeking to scale our impact in expansive ways with the upcoming launch of a new five-year strategic vision and plan. We are seeking a Managing Director with deep leadership experience and a proven track record in staff and cultural management, systems and organizational development, creative problem solving, and equity focused HR and internal operations. The Managing Director will report to and work closely with the Executive Director to create an environment for success that inspires staff, board, and other stakeholders. This person will serve as a primary partner to the Executive Director regarding organizational strategy and goals and will build and manage holistic, adaptive systems to support the organization's mission, values, culture, and learning style. The Managing Director will provide staff with a strong day-to-day leadership presence that promotes cross-team collaboration and communication and fosters a culture of growth and impact that values the environment, arts and culture, equity, inclusion, justice, and well-being.

What You'll Do

  • Lead the development and management of The Redford Center staff and day-to-day operations.
  • Directly manage and/or supervise staff and/or consultants performing functions in HR, finance, administration, IT, legal, office facilities, and operations. In partnership with the Executive Director, you will support the Program Director, Finance Manager, and Development Manager in executing their workplans.
  • Lead the creation and implementation of new or modified human resources practices, policies, philosophies, and systems that align with the organization's values and DEIJ efforts.
  • Lead the development of new or modified administrative and operational systems, protocols, and infrastructure to support a growing, ambitious, and complex learning organization.
  • Ensure the organization complies with all regulatory and legal requirements.
  • Establish annual budgetary goals in conjunction with the Executive Director.
  • Ensure the organization operates within budget and IRS guidelines, has sufficient funds available to carry out its work, and collaborate with Finance Manager to provide regular financial reports to the Executive Director and Board.
  • Ensure the operationalization and implementation of The Redford Center's 5-year strategic vision and plan, regularly assess and report on impact and performance.
  • Lead the management team in planning and executing organization-wide projects and processes, including the annual budgeting and work planning processes.
  • Lead and manage human resources; in order to develop and strengthen professional development opportunities.
  • Implement best practices regarding compensation, benefits, performance evaluation, training, retention, and recruiting.
  • Lead the development of the organization's internal culture and steward the continued development and implementation of DEIJ, and accountability practices.

Position Requirements

  • Experience working in and/or knowledge of the independent film or media industry.
  • Passion for the environment.
  • Collaborative, supportive approach to leadership, management, and systems creation.
  • 7+ years of experience in a senior leadership position at a cultural or social impact organization.
  • 7+ years of staff management and supervisory experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, coach, guide, collaborate, work with, manage, and help build and support a diverse team of professionals in their growth and development.
  • Critical thinking skills with proven ability to develop, implement, and evaluate organizational infrastructure, systems, and policies.
  • Clear thinking, strong communication and listening skills.
  • Successful record of managing and executing projects and expected outcomes within budget and time restraints.
  • Interest in and experience with integrating justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion priorities into internal and external practices and an elevated understanding of how entrenched challenges and structural inequality affect organizational culture.
  • Proficiency in file, data, and project management, and systems proficiency in tools such as Airtable, Salesforce, Excel, Slack, Asana, or comparable tools.

Preferred Experience

  • Creating and implementing human resources protocols, policies, and systems.
  • Experience developing, implementing, and stewarding content management systems.
  • Experience managing nonprofit regulatory requirements and legal compliance issues.
  • Literacy in environmental issues, and cultural competence in environmental justice.

    All candidates must also be able to

    • Work legally in the United States and maintain proper work authorization throughout employment.
    • Meet the physical requirements, which include:
      • Able to sit and stand for long periods.
      • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and ability to adjust focus.
      • Able to do extended periods of work at a computer.
      • Able to assist with events, which includes lifting up to 35 lbs.
    • Work occasional evenings and weekends, and travel when needed.
    • Pass a background check.

    Salary and Benefits

    This is a hybrid position. Our team generally works remotely, but we do require that staff come to the office for team meetings and attend some in-person events. Our office is located in the Presidio in San Francisco. Candidates must be based in, or planning to move to, California; San Francisco Bay Area-based candidates are strongly preferred. The salary range will be $130-$160k annually, commensurate with demonstrated skills and experience. We offer a flexible schedule and an excellent benefits package, including generous paid time off, 100% coverage of employees' health, dental, and vision insurance, and participation in a 403b retirement plan with an employer contribution of 3%, after six months.
