Compensation Overview

The annual base salary range provided for this position is a nationwide market range and represents a broad range of salaries for this role across the country. The actual salary for this position will be determined by a number of factors, including the scope, complexity and location of the role; the skills, education, training, credentials and experience of the candidate; and other conditions of employment. As part of our comprehensive compensation and benefits program, employees are also eligible for performance-based cash incentive awards.

Salary Range

$135,300.00 - $223,200.00

What Is the Opportunity?

Northfield provides property, casualty, and specialty insurance products and services for the excess and surplus marketplace. The Managing Director (MD), Northfield Contract Binding oversees a team of Excess & Surplus lines (E&S) underwriters who partner with General Agents (GAs) to provide property and general liability coverage for new and renewal business based on customers' needs. As an MD, you are strategic, decisive, detail-oriented, and know how to build relationships internally and externally to drive results. Your ability to lead others in independently assessing complex risk and sell our products in challenging markets will contribute to the profitability and success of Travelers.

What Will You Do?

  • Manage the profitability, growth, and retention of business within a location or region.
  • Partner with the VP of Contract Binding to develop and implement business strategies to effectively achieve profit and growth objectives.
  • Effectively manage local strategies, objectives, and tactics concerning relationships with General Agents.
  • Manage assigned General Agent relationships, consult, and provide referrals on accounts outside General Agent authority.
  • Regularly review General Agent portfolios and conduct audits of individual accounts.
  • Regularly meet in person with General Agents and have the ability to travel to these meetings.
  • Provide strategic direction and support to team and exercise responsibility for coaching, training, and performance management.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

What Will Our Ideal Candidate Have?

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Eight to ten years of relevant Excess & Surplus underwriting experience with experience in managing delegated authority relationships.
  • Experience leading or managing others.
  • Prior management of a field location.
  • Expert level knowledge of Excess & Surplus Lines products, environment, and the local insurance market.
  • Strong critical thinking skills with the ability to proactively identify underwriting, marketing, or financial challenges and analyze available information to make timely decisions in alignment with our risk appetite.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to successfully negotiate in difficult situations with agents and brokers.
  • CPCU designation.

What is a Must Have?

  • Six years of underwriting experience.
