Overview: FVLC's legal department provides the agency's core service – assistance in obtaining restraining orders, family law, and housing law support for people escaping domestic violence. The Managing Attorney is a strong advocate for victims and effective collaborator who engages and motivates staff, volunteer attorneys, and legal interns to deliver high-quality legal services. The Managing Attorney is adept at building and maintaining relationships, and successfully leverages community partnerships to effectively address the issue of domestic violence in the community.Responsibilities:
- Develop, implement, and oversee all legal program activities in partnership with FVLC management. Duties may include designing and monitoring program goals and outcomes, managing evaluation activities, and assisting with the development of grant proposals.
- Recruit, train, and supervise legal staff and volunteers, including pro bono attorneys and law students.
- Oversee legal intake and case assessment process. Manage case flow by assigning cases and supporting attorneys in monitoring caseload.
- Ensure compliance with State Bar regulations for legal service providers.
- Build and maintain relationships with community partners, with a focus on the courts, other legal service providers, and local law firms.
- Represent FVLC in the community at collaborative meetings, task forces, etc.
- Regularly monitor and assess client data for the legal department, and assist with preparation of program reports for internal and external audiences.
- Work in partnership with other FVLC program managers to ensure effective coordination of services, specifically with the Managing Advocate to coordinate legal intake and with the Youth Program Manager to coordinate legal services for teens.
- This position is not limited to those duties listed in this position profile. Duties and responsibilities may be changed, expanded, reduced, or deleted to meet the business needs of FVLC.
Requirements:
- Licensed to practice law in California and in good standing.
- At least 4 years representing clients in domestic violence and/or family law matters.
- Knowledge and awareness of local, regional, and national issues related to domestic violence.
- At least 2 years off supervisory experience.
- Strong commitment to supporting FVLC's mission.
- Ability to relate well people from diverse socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office.
- Criminal background check (provided upon hire).
- Bilingual Spanish speaker preferred.
