Manager, Science Policy & Research Affairs

We are seeking a Manager, Science Policy & Research Affairs to provide operational support to the Director of Science Policy regarding the implementation of recommendations from the Basic Science Advisory Group (BSAG) Report. In this role, you will have the opportunity to work with Federal Agencies and the Congress to monitor research policy issues and identify areas of opportunity for the Society. You will also work with our Research Affairs Core Committee (RACC) and collaborate cross-functionally with other Society departments under the supervision of the Director of Science Policy to support the Society’s member research communities and implement the Society’s basic science strategy.
What you’ll bring to the job:
  • Advanced degree in biological sciences with a focus on bench/laboratory research required with postdoctoral experience in an endocrine-related field preferred.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills with the ability to communicate complex scientific and policy issues.
  • Effective translator of scientific information for different audiences including scientific and non-scientific audiences.
  • Familiar with NIH policies and procedures.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite – Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook.

What you’ll own:
  • Analyze member scientist participation in Society activities, identify areas for improvement and initiatives to increase scientific engagement aligned with Board-approved objectives and key results.
  • Provide staff support to RACC, including developing agendas, drafting minutes, coordinating workflow, establishing/maintaining collaborations, and implementing activities.
  • Participate in advocacy activities and monitor and report on developments at research funding agencies and US Congress that affect our scientific communities. Identify areas of opportunity and work with members to prioritize, establish, and advance our positions, including developing positions, drafting letters, comments, and testimony.
  • Lead efforts to increase funding for the National Institutes of Health and manage the Society’s work on climate change and endocrine health.
  • Manage member task forces to implement projects in support of our scientific community
  • Communicate policy news and Society activities to members through Society communication vehicles e.g., articles for newsletter and for monthly magazine as assigned.
  • Work with other Society departments/activities to coordinate data gathering and analyze metrics related to member scientist engagement.
  • Draft policy memos and reports for staff and members on science-related issues, policy and advocacy.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Follow up with others to ensure that agreements and commitments have been fulfilled. Develop and use systems to organize and keep track of information or progress. Set up and monitor procedures to ensure high quality of work.
  • Effectively communicate ideas, thoughts, and facts in writing. Use correct grammar, punctuation, spelling, and sentence structure. Organize written ideas clearly. Tailor written communication to effectively reach audience. Express ideas clearly and concisely in writing.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with members by listening, understanding, and responding to identified needs. Respond to member/leadership/community needs. Actively promote positive relationships with the membership and other groups (committees, leadership, stakeholders, etc.). Exhibit high level of customer service and identify ways to improve service procedures/levels within own position. Respond and follow-through on internal and external requests.

Work Location:
This position is located in Washington, DC and walking distance to Metro and major bus lines. The Endocrine Society offers a flexible, hybrid work environment. Employees are expected to work from the office at least 2 days per week to foster our collaborative culture and support cross-functional interaction.
