Job description

SUMMARY
Manages and provides overall operational and clinical nursing leadership to WHMC's inpatient Labor & Delivery and postpartum departments. Plans and organizes inpatient nursing operations and resources to ensure effective and efficient delivery of patient care consistent with applicable laws, standards and regulations. Establishes protocols and practices, ensuring compliance with department, operating unit, perinatal standards, and organizational standards, policies and procedures, Washington State Department of Health standards, and applicable laws and regulations. Takes a tactical approach in identifying best practices and standardizing workflows/processes, and developing plans of action to implement changes. Reviews budgets in collaboration with assigned Director to achieve financial targets via effective utilization of personnel, resources and supplies. Develops and maintains a solid partnership with internal and external peers, leaders, and/or local/state/federal agencies to facilitate and collaborate on initiatives or issues resolution. Provides guidance and/or direct intervention in resolving challenging or complex situations.

AREA OF RESPONSIBILITY
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Patient Care
  • Performs direct patient care within scope of RN practice act and according to hospital policies and procedures, when needed or assigned.
  • Identifies educational needs, implements and evaluates learning, and documents patient and family education for all educational needs.
  • Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of errors.
  • Demonstrates knowledge level necessary to assess patient's psychosocial, educational and physical needs, and the knowledge and skill to address these needs in an age-appropriate manner for all age groups.
  • Responds quickly and appropriately to emergency situations.
  • Utilizes appropriate pain management techniques and documents competency.
  • Participates in scheduled shifts as designated and collaborated with the Director.

Infection Control/ Employee Health
  • Utilizes all hospital and patient care infection control policies and standards.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of standard precautions and aseptic technique.
  • Reports exposures promptly and seeks assistance for care/follow-up.

QUALIFICATIONS
Required
  • Active RN licensure in the state of Washington.
  • Current AHA BLS certification within 30 days of hire.
  • ACLS, PALS, NRP, within 6 months of hire and maintained.
  • Advanced AWHONN Fetal Monitoring certification.
  • Minimum 4 years RN experience.
  • Minimum 2 years recent RN experience (within last 3 years) in the Family Birth Center environment.

Preferred
  • BSN from accredited School of Nursing.
  • Previous management experience.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS
This position is primarily worked in a clinical and office environment. This may include irregular working hours including weekends and on-call responsibilities. Travel to off-site locations for meetings, education and training may be required. The position will frequently require walking, lifting, reaching carrying, kneeling, bending, stooping, pushing and pulling of objects weighing up to 20lbs. The position will occasionally require the ability to lift, and carry, up to 50 pounds and push or pull over 50 pounds, as well as require bending, twisting, squatting, reaching, reaching overhead, sitting and standing frequently. Occasionally the position requires climbing, kneeling and crawling. The position requires continuous finger dexterity and fine manipulation. All basic life functions such as hearing, seeing, speaking, standing and walking are required.
