The Museum Art Studio Educator oversees all Art Studio programs and activities for early childhood and K-12, as well as tour-connected studio activities for adults. The Art Studio educator manages school tour arrival procedures and departures, and teaches the studio activities for all school tours as well as for selected adult tours.


The NBMAA welcomes over 10,000 students, teachers, and chaperones annually from New Britain and around the State. Museum visits are most often two-hours in length and include a docent-guided tour and hands-on art making activity in the light-filled Art Studios in the Museum's Arts & Education Center. At NBMAA, students of all abilities are invited to explore American art and culture through discussion and activities that utilize observation, problem solving, and critical thinking and connect history, literature, STEM, and the arts to encourage interdisciplinary learning.


Responsibilities include but are not limited to:


General

  1. Develop personal knowledge of permanent collection and American art in general to enhance development and implementation of studio programming and to serve as a tour guide in occasional situations
  2. Develop knowledge of special exhibitions as they are presented at the museum
  3. Understand the variety and diversity of visiting schools
  4. Understand and be able to implement Common Core standards and Connecticut standards in various subject areas into studio activities
  5. Develop and grow relationships with the Museum's staff and volunteers, especially the Visitor Experience team, docents, studio volunteers, and interns

School Year Programs
  1. Learn all school tours and implement studio activities for early childhood, homeschool, and K-12 schools

  1. Serve as the teacher for all studio activities, including
    1. Planning and preparation of lessons and materials
    2. Delivery of studio programs
    3. Setting and resetting of materials
    4. Managing well-organized and welcoming studios and storage spaces, ensuring a constant supply of Art materials

  1. Supervise the school tour logistics:
    1. Greet school groups and facilitate student drop off and bus parking
    2. Oversee tour launching with docent volunteers
    3. Organize studio volunteers and direct them in the preparation of materials and studio activities
    4. Prepare and provide teacher packets that include student guest passes and family program flyers for all groups
    5. Assist in the administration of teacher and chaperone evaluations
    6. Inventory, organize, and maintain all studios and storage spaces
    7. Support school outreach as directed

School Vacation and Summer Programs

  1. Plan, develop and instruct school vacation and summer art camps
  2. Support hands-on components of family and community programs

Children's Studio Classes

  1. Oversee children's Saturday morning studio classes: Art Start; Art Explorers
    1. Identify, contract and manage annually-hired studio instructors
    2. Monitor program enrollment
  2. Oversee pre-teen Thursday studio classes: Studio@4
    1. Identify contract and manage monthly-hired studio instructors
    2. Monitor monthly program enrollment

Special Exhibitions/Permanent Collection

  1. Assist the Director of Education and Manager of Community and Family Programs in the development of supplementary educational materials for schools to accompany special exhibitions, artists, and works in the permanent collection
  2. Provide an art workshop experience for small group of adults as an extension of their tour experience in the permanent collection or special exhibition

Special Initiatives

  1. Assist with the coordination, installation and programming of the annual student art exhibition(s) collaboratively with teachers, including the annual Art Exhibition from the New Britain Public and Parochial Schools, and Art Exhibition from the Berlin Public Schools
  2. Co-plan Educator Professional Development programs/workshops and lead studio activities
  3. Complete other duties as assigned by Director of Education and Manager of Education Programs

KNOWLEDGE, EDUCATION AND SKILLS:
  • BA in studio art or art education, or related field; certified art teacher preferred.
  • Familiarly with local and national learning standards
  • 3-5 years of experience teaching in schools, museums, art centers or other relevant agencies
  • Welcoming and enthusiastic approach with students and adults, individually and in groups.
  • Effective and positive classroom management skills for all size groups, with potentially 60 students in the studio for one-hour
  • Positive, motivated, high-energy, creative, and enthusiastic about the arts
  • Ability to take direction, to multi-task and to think critically in a busy work environment
  • Evidence of excellent customer service
  • Flexibility to work on the third Saturday of every month and to cover for weekend emergencies
