Position Summary
The Manager, Manufacturing Engineering provides leadership in developing equipment
and automation strategies, driving continuous improvement projects to support
operational performance and efficiency, quality improvement, scrap reduction, cost
reductions, and financial targets. They oversee a team of Manufacturing Engineers to
ensure activities are directed towards driving production and process improvements,
reducing waste and reducing Taco's overall cost.

Measures of success:

  • % of Labor Variance to Standard
  • Reduce the Cost of Poor Quality (scrap, etc.)
  • Cost Reduction Target Achievement
  • % Production Schedule Attainment

Responsibilities
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Manages a team to improve the flow of material and product throughout the
  • production facility as well as to improve efficiencies.
  • Develops new or modifies existing production methods to ensure they meet quality
  • and production standards as well as ergonomic standards.
  • Develops methods to significantly increase production up-time, reduce employee lost
  • productivity time, and reduce scrap and defects through equipment upgrades,
  • modifications and/or poke-yoke.
  • Drives part, product and process improvements with documented cost reductions.
  • Plans and prioritizes Manufacturing Engineering time for new projects, continuous improvement (CI) projects, etc.
  • Leads the team in ensuring Design for Manufacturing (processes and parts) / Design for Automation during new product development.
  • Determines optimum plant layout and process flow to achieve optimal output.
  • Conducts capability studies to define process stability and capability.
  • Works with Quality to address process issues that impact customers.
  • Performs data collection and trend analysis for development of management reports.
  • Ensures new equipment designs improve overall cost and efficiency while preventing defects.
  • Aligns, prioritizes, and allocates resources to accomplish department/company goals.
  • Develops relationships with equipment vendors to improve customer service / response time.
  • Leads complex projects and supervises team members to do the same.
  • Analyzes Manufacturing Engineering current and future required skills and develops team to meet those needs.
  • Leads kaizen and other lean manufacturing events.
  • Quantifies and documents production equipment technical requirements. Presents this information to potential qualified equipment manufacturers.
  • Leads Manufacturing Engineering department effort to drive preventive maintenance.
  • Prepares and manages department budget.

People Management

  • Evaluates team members to identify strengths and opportunities for improvement; collaborates on development actions and ensure resources necessary to complete actions
  • Cascades relevant and appropriate information about the company and department effectively and in a timely manner
  • Coaches and mentors for skill and knowledge development
  • Executes necessary responsibilities of team during absences or alternate engagement
  • Ensures team adheres to company policies, practices, and department standards
  • Assigns actions and ensure completion
  • Reviews work quality and provides feedback and guidance to team

Qualifications
Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in Manufacturing or Mechanical Engineering or related field
  • Six Sigma Green Belt Certification
  • 10+ years of experience in a manufacturing environment
  • 5+ years of management experience including direct reports
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
  • Experience with various enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems (knowledge of Epicor ERP preferred)
  • Experience as a manufacturing/mechanical engineer in a production environment
  • Working knowledge of lean manufacturing and Six Sigma tools
  • Experience in manufacturing process development
  • Demonstrated process improvement initiatives
  • Effective communication skills, including excellent oral and written skills
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and good math skills
  • Travel: approximately 10% of time to suppliers, conferences, other company locations (primarily domestic)

Preferred:

  • Six Sigma Black Belt or Master Black Belt Certification
  • Robotics and automation experience with understanding of programmable logic controller (PLC), etc.
  • Experience performing new product qualification
  • Proficient with CAD systems (SolidWorks preferred)

Work Environment
This position works primarily in an office environment using computers and technology.
Verbal and auditory capability are required. Occasional exposure in production plant where
large equipment and noise are prevalent. Safety gear is required in these areas.
This position reports into the site every day and may be able to work from home on an ad
hoc basis.

This position has approximately 7 direct reports. Roles may include:

  • Manufacturing Engineer
  • Sr Manufacturing Engineer
  • Molding Process Engineer
  • Toolmaker
