ABOUT THE ACADEMY

The American Academy of Actuaries (Academy) is a D.C.-based 20,000+ member professional association whose mission is to serve the public and the U.S. actuarial profession. Academy members include consultants, corporate executives and staff, regulators, government officials, academics, and retired actuaries. Their areas of practice cover pensions, life insurance, casualty insurance, health insurance, financial reporting, risk management, and more.

The Academy assists public policymakers on all levels by providing leadership, objective expertise, and actuarial advice on risk and financial security issues. The Academy also sets qualification, practice, and professionalism standards for actuaries credentialed by one or more of the five U.S.-based actuarial organizations in the United States.

OVERVIEW

In support of the Education & Events Department, this manager-level position is responsible for developing and executing the delivery of programs in support of Academy-led educational events and operational activities to serve member professional development and educational needs. This professional is part of a 3-person events and education team that collaborates with Academy staff and volunteers to plan and execute online and in-person programs in line with the Academy’s strategic plan. The Manager, Event Production and Operations, is a creative, solutions-oriented professional who wields a deep understanding of and experience with various technology platforms (such as ON24, Zoom, and more) to develop and deliver virtual, online, and in-person education programs.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • In-person educational events- Provide start-to-finish management of in-person seminars and symposia (currently 2-3 per year), including writing and managing RFP process, identifying venues and vendors and preliminary contract review, managing venue and vendors, coordinating registration, onsite management, and post-event evaluation. This requires collaborating across departments and with volunteers to deliver value-focused, responsive education resources and events to members.
  • Webinars produce the Academy’s webinar programs and oversee use of the On24 platform in support of delivering a seamless and engaging attendee experience, including coordinating content with subject matter experts and Academy staff, managing speakers, producing and executing delivery of events, and evaluating and analyzing performance results.
  • The Academy Annual Meeting- Support the development, promotion, and execution of the Academy’s Annual Meeting, ensuring that event logistics (such as registration, AV, and more) and third-party relationships are appropriately managed, learning objectives are met, and the attendee experience exceeds expectations.
  • Academy presence at affiliate organization meetings work with Academy staff to support exhibit booths, tables, session presentations at other actuarial and affiliate organizations. Maintain supplies of meeting materials such as tablecloths, signage, and giveaways. Coordinate shipment when needed.
  • Learning Management act as backup in the management of the Academy’s Learning Management System, based on Crowd Wisdom.
  • Year-round responsibilities- Assist the Senior Director, Education & Events with the successful execution of special projects as needed; Travel to various Academy events and meetings throughout the year, and other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Bachelor’s degree preferably in Management, Business related field; and a minimum of five to seven years’ related experience and/or training within education and events; or equivalent combination of education and program delivery experience.

Association management experience, preferably within education and/or conferences and a focus on hybrid execution of in-person and virtual programs is required.

Technical experience with education and event technology (such as ON24) and LMS platforms, required. Experience in online/distance learning, hybrid delivery, and project management is a major plus.

CMP and/or DES preferred.

The internal title for this position is Manager, Education and Events.

This is an Exempt position.
