General Functions/Distinguishing Characteristics
OPEN UNTIL FILLED
The employee occupying this position performs duties to assist with the operations of the public works department to include building maintenance and operation of light equipment.
The Maintenance Worker is expected operate some equipment, perform manual labor, and light building maintenance. Work is performed with some independence within prescribed guidelines standards, and procedures. Work hours may include weekends, evenings and answering trouble calls.
Essential Functions & Duties
  • Perform light maintenance of city buildings as directed (painting, light remodeling, drywall replacement, replacement of fixtures both plumbing and electrical, maintenance and cleaning of heating systems coil units, air handlers, boilers, furnaces, unit heaters, HVAC units, cleaning of A/C coils, filter changes, interior and exterior door maintenance, lock replacement, sypher code lock changes, roofing, carpentry, concrete work, installation of exterior siding, flag maintenance (lowering and raising), run Cat 5 Cable and make terminations to computers as required.
  • Operating equipment (man lifts, bucket trucks, chain saws, plow trucks, loaders, cement mixers, and drain cleaning equipment) for building maintenance, parking lot lighting &building sidewalk repair, roofing and gutter replacement or repairs in a careful and skillful manner.
  • Perform manual labor as required in building maintenance and construction on city water & sewer facilities.
  • Perform other related duties as required by the Superintendent of Public Works.

Knowledge, Skills, Experience and Personal Qualifications
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED).M
  • Must be able to pass APSIN background clearance to work at City of Palmer sensitive facilities. Must be able to meet with State of Alaska officials and city insurance inspectors during annual elevator checks, biannual boiler, and pressure vessel inspections.
  • Current valid State of Alaska Driver's License with acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to comprehend and execute oral or written instructions and to apply guidelines to varied situations.
  • Knowledge of the latest edition adopted of the uniform building, plumbing, mechanical code.
  • Ability to read building plan sets and blueprints to complete tasks assigned.
  • Ability to organize activities and tasks in an efficient and effective manner and work independently in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Ability to meet and deal with the public and others in a pleasant and courteous manner.
  • Must have a minimum of 2 years of experience or equivalent knowledge in plumbing, electrical, carpentry, HVAC, and Controls.
  • Skill in the safe use of machines and equipment, as required by the position.
  • Ability to work as a member of a team of staff working towards a common goal.
  • Ability to multi-task to perform and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to meet attendance requirements for the position.
