The person will support the maintenance program on the Caribbean Islands NWR Complex by assisting in moderate to very heavy physical effort on many projects on Refuge lands. The following describes primary tasks (duties) to be performed.
DESCRIPTION OF WORK:
1. Repairs of fences and installation /repairs gates on Caribbean Islands NWR Complex The person will assist FWS Staff and volunteers repairing damaged segments of refuge boundary fences. This is an-on-going work that needs to be done year around, every time the fences are found broken /damaged to avoid the illegal entrance of off-road vehicles, cattle and horses into Refuge lands. The job includes working safely with barb wire, digging and installing, usually by hand, metal and wooden posts on remote areas under extreme weather conditions.
2. Assist in general facility maintenance projects at Caribbean Islands NWR Complex The person will assist FWS maintenance staff on all types of construction, rehabilitation and preventive maintenance projects. The work will include, concrete, carpentry, plumbing and basic electrical work. Assist FWS Staff on all planting and vegetation control projects. Operation of agricultural equipment that includes mowing equipment will be utilized.
3. Maintenance mechanic operations.
Assist on general mechanic of vehicles and heavy equipment, fire engines and mowing tractors. Conduct preventive and corrective maintenance of Refuge fleet. Assist on welding, torch cutting, grinding and general metal work needed on different projects like construction and installation of gates, signs and water control structures. Assist maintenance mechanic on last minute requests to build small items necessary to carry on special events conducted by Refuge staff.
4. Maintenance of refuge facilities.
Assist Maintenance Worker on with maintenance of refuge grounds, trails and other roads, installing directional and information signs and keeping observation platforms, towers, bird observation blinds and boardwalks in good and safe conditions during the year.
Support maintenance staff on all upcoming projects within the Caribbean Islands NWR Complex.
Assist FWS Staff on identifying and processing the disposal of unserviceable property.
SPECIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:
The person needs to have a valid state driver's license, basic knowledge of vehicle repairs, heavy equipment operation, welding, masonry work and basic carpentry skills.
Person must have Fish and Wildlife Service certification to operate heavy equipment. Person should be available to work extended hours when required under extreme weather conditions. Safe use of workshop machinery such as table and hand saws, drills, chainsaws, band saws and general carpentry tools.
The person needs to be willing to respond to emergency situations such as fire or any other disaster. Certification will be required.
Person needs to be fully bilingual (English/Spanish).
The person will work 40 hours per week from 7:00am to 3:30pm, Monday thru Friday.
The company/contractor needs to be in the vicinity of the Refuge to be able to meet and respond any immediate issue or emergency respond.
The person should wear uniform provided by contractor and safety equipment all the time while conducting maintenance work.
Pay Details: $20.00 per hour
