Works under general supervision to perform journeyman-level work, such as repairing and maintaining electrical wiring; evaluating layout plans and cost estimates; installing new systems; repairing existing electrical high and low voltage electrical systems; performing minor rebuilding tasks; and repairing or replacing miscellaneous equipment.
Essential Job Functions
- Ensures the safe, efficient, and cost-effective repair and maintenance of all electrical equipment in the District.
- Inspects electrical installations of contractors to ensure compliance with specifications and electrical codes.
- Evaluates and estimates the cost of electrical repair and minor installations for new and/or remodeled projects.
- Plans layout and installs and repairs wiring, electrical fixtures, apparatus, and control equipment.
- Responds to electrical emergency situations, when requested.
- Performs other related duties as assigned or directed.
Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from an accredited high school with a high school diploma or possess a GED; Plus, four (4) years' experience in commercial electrical installation and /or maintenance. Memphis and Shelby County Journeyman Electrical License required. (PROOF OF EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND/OR EXPERIENCE IS REQUIRED).
Degree Equivalency Formula:
Bachelor's Degree= 4 years plus required years of experience.
Master's Degree= 2 years plus required years of experience. Where Master's degrees are required, years for Bachelor's Degrees must be included.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT(S):
- Memphis and Shelby County Journeyman Electrical License required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Must have knowledge of all applicable codes, safety standards, regulations, and precautionary measures.
- Must be able to draw and read blueprints and schematic drawings.
- Must be able to develop and maintain effective working relationships.
- Must have knowledge of electrical fire systems, clock systems, and electrical motor systems.
- Must have a thorough knowledge of city and county electrical codes, Memphis Light, Gas, & Water rules and regulations, and Fire Department requirements.
- Must have thorough and complete knowledge of commercial and industrial wiring and wiring systems.
- Must be able to estimate costs of electrical jobs.
Physical Requirements and Working Environment
Physical Demands: Requires sedentary work involving standing or walking for brief periods, exerting up to 10 pounds of force on a regular basis; and some dexterity in operating office equipment; must be able to use hands and fingers
Unavoidable Hazards: The position is exposed to no unusual environmental hazards.
Sensory (ADA) Requirements: The position requires normal visual acuity and field of vision, hearing and speaking abilities.
