Title:Maintenance Specialist

Employment Status: Non-exempt

Salary: $25.00 - $29.00 per hour (based on experience and shift)

Summary of Position:

Under the supervision of the Director, Facilities, with day-to-day guidance from the Senior Maintenance Specialist, this role provides and/or oversees skilled maintenance and minor repairs for plumbing, HVAC, electrical, carpentry, and general maintenance and cleaning of historic facilities, grounds, and gardens. This role also may also assist in the set-up, maintenance, breakdown, logistics, and security of events. This position is considered essential and may be required to work during emergency closings.

This position is located in Washington D.C. and Meridian requires MD, DC, or VA residence for all employees.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Inspect and perform basic preventive maintenance on all building systems and equipment, including heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC), plumbing, electrical, and elevators.
  • Respond to emergency maintenance requests and assess the building for potential safety hazards.
  • Perform minor repairs and maintenance tasks as needed.
  • Monitor building equipment to ensure proper functioning.
  • Ensure that the building meets all safety and health regulations.
  • Coordinate with outside vendors and contractors for maintenance and repair services.
  • Perform skilled and basic household repairs as required including but not limited to minor plumbing, HVAC, and carpentry, and cleaning.
  • General safety/security duties, including but not limited to securing exterior doors, gates, windows, and critical offices; may provide some limited event security.
  • Event support duties, including but not limited to table/equipment set up and breakdown, banquet and housekeeping needs, and coordination/communications with relevant staff
  • Some janitorial support duties, including but not limited to vacuuming / mopping, trash removal, dusting, and re-stocking of products
  • Dependable and personable communications; reporting any/all safety and maintenance issues to relevant staff

Education/Experience:

  • 3-5 years experience
  • Direct experience in event centers and/or historic buildings a plus
  • Apprenticeship in any of the building trades and/or certifications is highly desirable

Technical Requirements:

  • Must have the ability to access and use an employer provided smartphone, iPad, and electronic timekeeping system
  • Experience with audio/visual equipment is highly desirable

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Superior attention to detail with dedication to providing the best service possible
  • Hands-on supportive team member with an ability to support a variety of maintenance and event related activities
  • Strong inter-cultural communication skills; maturity, cultural sensitivity, and tact suitable for working with individuals from around the world
  • Ability to lift and move up to 75 pounds of boxes and equipment for various event needs.
  • Ability to maintain a professional demeanor and appearance at all times
  • Other duties and special projects as assigned

Physical Effort and Dexterity:

Must be able to climb stairs, carry heavy items and other equipment (up to 75 lbs.).

Scheduling and Environment:

  • Monday through Friday, 12:00 PM to 8:00 PM (there is some flexibility). Paid overtime may occasionally be required

Visual Acuity, Hearing, and Speaking:

Excellent verbal and written proficiency in English required; Spanish fluency and/or proficiency a plus.
