BASIC FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Operate mailing machines; adjust, maintain and operate MAIL PROCESSING equipment such as ink jet addressing system, mail inserter, tabber and folders. process, meter outgoing mail, mail handwork and use computers to enter and print appropriate U.S. Postal Service paperwork. Participate in Lean Process Improvement activities, daily, weekly and monthly huddles. Lean idea generation and team building, meetings and other workflow improvement activities.
CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Process Standard (Bulk) and individual outgoing mail from university departments to domestic and foreign areas that require postage and/or special mailing classifications.
Operate mailing machines; adjust, maintain and operate MAIL PROCESSING equipment such as mail meters, ink jet mail addressing systems, labelers, inserter, tabbers, folders and extensive hand working of mail including Match Perfect mail.
Daily Lean Process Improvement activities, huddles and workflow improvement activities.
Obtain, expand, and exercise detailed knowledge of USPS rates and regulations.
Determine optimum postage rates for mail.
Answer inquiries from faculty, staff and students on proper mailing rates and schedules.
Complete departmental mail/postage records as required.
Sort and case mail into mail box slots using our box number system.
Run postage meters.
May be required to pick-up mail from campus boxes or mail stops on occasion.
Participate in our Lean process improvement strategies, workflow improvements.
May be required to occasionally deliver/pick-up mail from the USPS using a university car, van or truck.
Perform related duties as required.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Supervised by Mail Preparation Supervisor.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
High School graduation or GED certificate and one year of experience processing United States and/or campus mail.
Six months of additional experience or training as a Mail Rater, or equivalent, may substitute for required education.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
DESIRABLE: Experience or willingness to learn computer data entry.
ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS
Positions allocated to this class are distinguished by responsibility for processing both foreign and domestic mail for proper postage and are expected to have knowledge of United States Post Office Regulations in the International Mail Manual and Domestic Mail Manual.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
Must be able to lift and carry weights up to 70 pounds and push, pull up to 100 pounds. For heavier weights the skill to use manual or electric powered equipment to move materials.
