Job Description
Are you passionate about ensuring seamless mail operations and making a meaningful impact in government service? Join us at the Department of Administrative Services (DAS) as a Mail Clerk 2 and play a pivotal role in facilitating efficient mail processing for the State of Iowa.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Mail Sorting and Processing: Take charge of sorting incoming parcels, federal, and interoffice mail, categorizing them by agency with care and precision. A thorough understanding of United States Postal Services regulations is essential as you will be responsible for accurately handling mail for presentation to the USPS.
    • Mail may consist of tax payments, license applications, crime evidence, employment applications, client forms, child support payments or legal correspondence. It will be imperative to have knowledge of ALL agency acronyms, staff, and addresses to insure accurate and timely delivery of mail.
  • Postage Application: Utilize your expertise to apply postage in the most cost-effective manner, whether through mail piece design, barcoding, or vendor selection. Precise postage application and accurate billing to internal customer accounts are crucial aspects of this role.
  • Record Keeping and Management: Maintain accurate records and accounts related to mail processing activities, including tracking postage and staying updated on postal regulations. Your attention to detail will ensure the efficient management of mail operations.
  • Security Awareness: Exercise vigilance in identifying suspicious packages and letters, maintaining confidentiality, and adhering to security protocols. Your commitment to security will contribute to maintaining safety for elected offices, department heads, and the Governor's Offices.
  • Team Collaboration: Assist supervisors by providing guidance to team members, addressing inquiries, and ensuring seamless workflow within the mail room. Your collaborative approach will be instrumental in achieving departmental objectives.

  • Customer Service Excellence: Demonstrate a commitment to providing exceptional customer service, meeting quality standards, and ensuring customer satisfaction.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Previous experience in a mail processing or related role preferred.
  • Familiarity with mail processing machinery and equipment, such as postage metering machines, letter openers, and folding machines.
  • Knowledge of postal regulations, including handling of special mail items (e.g., insured mail, registered and certified mail).
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and accounts related to mail processing activities.

Minimum Qualification Requirements
Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:
  1. One year of full-time work experience processing mail.
  2. Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes experience equal to six months of work as a Mail Clerk 1.
