Location: Aptos, CA and/or San Francisco, CA

Type: Internship

Desired start date: May 2024

Below is the pay range for this position that we reasonably expect to pay. Individual compensation is based on various factors including experience, education, skillset, and other relevant qualifications. This range is for the Bay Area, California location and may be adjusted to the labor market in other geographic areas.

Anticipated Hiring Range: $18/hr - 24/hr

The Opportunity:

Ohalo Genetics invites eager interns to contribute to our pioneering efforts in the integration of Machine Learning algorithms and robotic systems for agricultural advancements. Candidates should exhibit meticulous attention to detail, a zest for immersive, hands-on technological work, and a sense of accountability. A background in AI, Machine Learning, computer vision, or robotics, particularly with experience in algorithm development, data analysis, or system automation, would be beneficial but is not essential. Interns will engage in critical tasks, including the development and optimization of Machine Learning models for predictive analytics and the programming of robotics for plant care automation, to bolster the efficacy and success of our lab and greenhouse operations.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead and contribute to innovative projects such as employing RLHF with LLM augmentation for advanced robotics control systems, focusing on both simulation and real-world applications.
  • Design, develop, and implement Machine Learning models to automate laboratory processes, including tissue culture and liquid handling, with an emphasis on efficiency and accuracy.
  • Utilize cloud technologies (Docker, AWS/GCP) and CI/CD pipelines for the scalable deployment of Machine Learning and robotics applications, enhancing system availability and resource management.
  • Apply Python, TensorFlow, and PyTorch in algorithm development for automated phenotyping and plant manipulation, incorporating computer vision for improved microscopy analysis.
  • Collaborate with our team of experts in ML, AI, and robotics to integrate innovative technologies into laboratory workflows, aiming for improved throughput and experiment reproducibility.
  • Ensure the safety, maintenance, and troubleshooting of lab automation equipment, adhering to strict protocols and standards.
  • Document all code, algorithms, and system configurations meticulously to maintain project scalability and reproducibility.

Candidate Profile:

  • Passionate about leveraging technology, especially AI and robotics, to solve real-world problems in sustainable agriculture. You bring a creative mindset to developing solutions that push the boundaries of what's possible in the field.
  • Background in computer science, robotics, engineering, or related fields, enriched with direct experience or a substantial academic foundation in Machine Learning, computer vision, and robotics simulation. Your expertise extends to Docker, cloud platforms (AWS/GCP), and CI/CD practices, setting a solid foundation for managing complex technological projects.
  • Demonstrated experience in managing Machine Learning projects from conception through to deployment, showcasing your ability to lead teams, define project scopes, manage timelines, and ensure project deliverables are met with high quality. You are adept at applying agile methodologies and project management tools to keep projects on track and stakeholders informed.
  • Advanced programming skills, with proficiency in Python and experience with libraries and frameworks such as TensorFlow and PyTorch. Your coding ability is complemented by a strong understanding of algorithm development, data structures, and system design principles, enabling you to tackle complex problems and contribute effectively to our technology stack.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and organizational skills, capable of managing complex tasks independently and as part of a diverse team. You excel in environments that require a high degree of precision and are meticulous in your approach to documentation and code quality.
  • Proactive in learning new technologies and solving technical challenges, with excellent communication skills that allow you to articulate complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders. You thrive in dynamic project scopes and are eager to explore new tools and technologies to enhance project outcomes.

Desired skills/experience:

  • A background in computer science, robotics, engineering, or related fields, with direct experience or a strong academic foundation in relevant technologies. A continuous learner, proactive in exploring new tools and technologies to enhance project outcomes.
  • Strong foundation in AI, Machine Learning, computer vision, and robotics, particularly in the context of algorithm development, data analysis, and system automation. Experience in developing and optimizing Machine Learning models for predictive analytics and programming robotics for plant care automation is highly regarded.
  • Demonstrable direct or related experience in employing Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback (RLHF) with Large Language Model (LLM) augmentation for advanced robotics control systems. This includes both simulation and real-world applications, highlighting an ability to bridge theoretical concepts with practical implementation.
  • Familiarity with cloud technologies (e.g., Docker, AWS, Google Cloud Platform) and Continuous Integration/Continuous Deployment (CI/CD) pipelines for scalable deployment of applications.
  • Advanced programming skills in Python, with experience using TensorFlow and PyTorch for algorithm development. Knowledge in applying computer vision techniques in an applied setting is preferred.
  • Proven track record of leading and contributing to team projects, demonstrating the ability to manage Machine Learning projects from inception through deployment. Experience in agile project management, defining project scopes, managing timelines, and ensuring quality deliverables.
  • Excellent communication abilities to articulate complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders, facilitating effective collaboration across diverse teams.
