Job Summary

Responsible for the design, development, testing, documentation, and implementation of new and improved assembly machinery, tooling, and processes, under the direction of the Assembly Engineer and/or Engineering Management staff, by performing the following duties:

Essential Duties and Responsibilities


  • Is responsible to assist and advise NPD on the development of new product requiring assembly. Is responsible for the development, trouble shooting and testing of new tooling geometry as well as the testing and measurement of any new product.
  • Is responsible to support the closing setup personnel with technical training as well as trouble shooting assistance on existing and newly implemented tooling; on an as required basis.
  • Is responsible to provide engineering support to YSU and to SMM (Mexico) in the maintenance and improvement of existing assembly equipment and processes as well as the design, acquisition, installation, start up, and training for new equipment and processes.
  • Develops and details assembly equipment and tooling. Is responsible for making changes or blocking the development of unsafe or ineffective tooling and machinery. Is responsible for interfacing with control development for all assembly machines.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities (cont.)

  • Is responsible to support the QC/QA groups to maintain correct work instructions, bills of materials, and routings to assure that assemblies are repeatable and can be judged correctly from a standard. Is required to enter engineering change requests (ECR) to correct any nonconformance in this area.
  • Needs to be capable of learning rudimentary control theory and to interface directly with control engineering relative to the machines being designed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Supervision and Scope of Position

This job has no direct supervisory responsibilities.

Qualifications and Requirements

Education/Experience: Degree of Engineering Technology or related 2-5 year experience and / or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. (particularly in MACHINE DESIGN for the small parts assembly industry). Machine Shop experience is a plus. Must be proficient in AutoCAD/Inventor/Solid Works or have the ability to quickly become proficient – this is a design position. Ability to converse and understand control theory as it applies to the assembly equipment.

Qualifications: Spanish would be a plus.

Travel Requirements: Minimal travel may be required.

Work Environment

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts. The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, risk of electrical shock, and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud. The employee is required to wear appropriate safety protective equipment at the proper times and in the proper environments as required by safety program rules.
