Job description

Introduction
We are dedicated to working with Wisconsinites while preserving and enhancing the natural resources of Wisconsin. In partnership with individuals and organizations, DNR staff manage fish, wildlife, forests, parks, air and water resources while promoting a healthy, sustainable environment and a full range of outdoor opportunities.
The Wisconsin DNR has two LTE (Limited Term Employee) positions available in Shiocton, Wisconsin office:
  • Wildlife Biologist
  • Wildlife Technician Advanced
The intention is to hire one candidate to perform both positions. This dual LTE appointment is comprised of two 20-hour positions for an expected total work schedule of 40 hours per week. See below for more information on the available positions.
Position Summary
Wildlife Technician Advanced
This position is responsible for a broad range of technical paraprofessional support for the wildlife management program. Work duties include leading implementation of priority habitat management activities, implementing biological surveys, maintaining internal databases, and providing timely customer service.
40% Lead implementation of priority habitat management activities. Includes, but is not limited to: leading field crews, operation of equipment, managing water control structures and supporting infrastructure, and application of herbicide.
20% Implement biological surveys and waterfowl banding operations. May include, but is not limited to: waterfowl, otter, large carnivore, upland bird brood, summer deer, woodcock, ruffed grouse, and crane survey data collection and entry.
20% Maintain internal databases associated with land and Wildlife management activities. Including, but not limited to: reconnaissance updates, documentation for completed treatments, and other data entry for infrastructure and resource management
10% Provide timely customer service. Includes, but is not limited to: responding to nuisance and injured animal concerns, providing general information about recreational opportunities, and directing customers to program specialists as appropriate.
10% Other paraprofessional or technical duties that support the Wildlife Management program, as assigned.
Wildlife Biologist
This position will assist with banding, ducks and geese banding in addition to conducting other wildlife surveys. This position will assist with local sampling efforts for Chronic Wasting Disease in hunter-harvested deer.
25% Manage local CWD sampling efforts. Collecting retropharyngeal lymph nodes as requested by hunters, processing self-sampled deer heads for sampling at other locations, customer service to hunters and local cooperating businesses.
25% Wildlife surveys and banding migratory game birds. This work includes: site preparations, baiting, trapping and banding live birds.
20% Computer based office work to support field work: GIS work, database work, responding to email.
10% Reconnaissance public lands to plan future work, identify invasive species outbreaks and monitor.
10% Participate in team meetings, responding to customer service calls, managing a local fleet of trucks.
10% All other duties as assigned.
Salary Information
These positions pay between $16.00 - $17.00 per hour and are in pay schedule and range 06-14 and 15-04. Compensation will be set in accordance with the State Compensation Plan.
Job Details
These are Limited Term Employment (LTE) positions. LTE positions do not automatically lead to permanent state employment or enjoy the same benefits as permanent employees; however, these positions do offer valuable work experience and an opportunity to learn more about career opportunities with the Department of Natural Resources and the State of Wisconsin.
LTE employees are limited to working 1039 hours per position within a twelve-month period.
In order to be considered for this position, you must be a resident of the State of Wisconsin.

Qualifications
In addition to the required qualifications below, the selected candidate must be eligible to drive a state vehicle and meet the following criteria:
Have a valid driver's license
Be at least 18 years of age
Have a minimum of two years of licensed driving experience
Have not had three (3) or more moving violations and/or at-fault accidents in the past two (2) years
Have no OWI/DUI violations within the past year
Required Qualifications:
• Ability to work independently, be self-motivated and punctual.
• Computer and software skills (MS Office).
• Ability to work irregular shifts including early mornings, evenings, and weekends.
• Ability to lift and carry 50 lbs.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Ability to communicate effectively with co-workers and the public.
• Knowledge, skills and experience of general maintenance operation.
• Knowledge or experience in wildlife management or a related field.
• Experience with equipment and facility maintenance.
• Experience operating equipment relevant to the position's duties (ex. agricultural tractor, chainsaw, ATV)
