Hammond Lower School seeks dynamic, trustworthy, and reliable individuals committed to maintaining productive and positive classroom learning during times when regular classroom teachers are unable to report to work. Ideally, candidates will have knowledge of effective teaching practices that ensure learning is a comfortable and meaningful experience. Our ideal candidates have excellent interpersonal and organizational skills, with a strong command of the English language.

This position is on an as-needed basis. The full duty day is 7:45 am - 3:15 p.m., and substitutes are hired for half day, full day, up to several full days at a time. While advance notice is often given, substitutes are sometimes requested the evening prior until early the morning of the day needed due to teacher illness or family emergency, so the ability to be responsive is desirable though not required.


Lower School Substitute Teacher responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Adhering to the curriculum and lesson plans provided by the regular teacher.
  • Following established school and classroom procedures and achieving lesson goals.
  • Complying with the duty schedule of the teacher being covered for the day, including recess, hallway transitions, lunch, and carpool.
  • Complying with all school employee regulations and policies at all times.
  • Taking attendance.
  • Ensuring the classroom and workstations are kept clean and orderly.
  • Overseeing the normal classroom rhythms and activities.
  • Compiling a report for the teacher for when they return.
  • Following school safety plans and procedures.

Lower School Substitute Teacher Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent qualification.
  • Bachelor's degree in teaching or related field is preferred.
  • A minimum of 6 months experience in early childhood, assistant teaching, teaching, extended day care, or elementary substitute teaching.
  • Must be detail-oriented and able to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Reporting: Lower School Substitute Teachers report to the Head of Lower School.
